From September until December and from February until June we offer full-time and part-time preparatory courses for those who wish to take the Cambridge First Certificate or Cambridge Advanced Certificate Examinations.
During the summer months of June, July and August classes still operate at these examination levels but at that time of the year we do not concentrate on exam techniques, we focus instead on the development of listening and speaking skills.
Cambridge Proficiency Examination preparation is generally on offer from September until June and then only on a part-time basis, one or two evenings per week.
For students who wish to enter an English-speaking university, at under-graduate or post-graduate level, we offer a series of programs which will enable them to acquire the necessary academic skills and required English level so that they can pursue their chosen university studies.
Candidates for this course should already have minimum entry level English (see below) and must ensure they have the correct academic qualifications to enter the university of their choice.
Course modules will include: General English, IELTS preparation, academic reading/writing/listening/speaking, cultural studies, presentation and note-taking skills.
Student counseling is provided throughout to help students successfully complete the course, choose the best university, complete their application forms and register for any required examinations.
Faculty Information:
*Ms. Pat Mackay, Director
Originally from the U.S., Pat has been living in Ireland for the past 18 years. She has her Degree in Education from Montclair State University, New Jersey, and has been involved in teaching languages (German, French and English) for the past 25 years. Her office door is always open and students are welcome to drop in to say hello, ask advice, complain about the weather, extend their stay - whatever!
*Susan
Although Susan has taught every level to every age, you're most likely to meet her if you are preparing for an advanced level examination. Susan enjoys travel (clocking up 4 continents in 12 months!) and good music which means Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan.
*Alan
Alan got his degree in science before realizing that his true calling was in the English classroom. He's lived and taught in Spain and traveled extensively and very much enjoys his present life as the only male teacher on our staff! Of course, this has its good and bad points. Alan can often be found lifting heavy articles and carrying them from one end of the school to the other.
*Lynda
After a year spent teaching in Segovia, Spain, Lynda decided to return to the home ground and to her favorite Irish things: hurling, Gaelic football, Guinness and Leprechaun Hunting. She still hasn't found that pot of gold but she's optimistic that she will!
*Jennifer
Last year Jennifer conquered South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand and the year before it was Alaska and Morocco. In between she somehow found time to teach at the Limerick Language Center. Although her passion is geography she has an even keener interest in meteorology. No wonder Jennifer's happiest at home - the weather is the number one topic of discussion here in Ireland!
*Newer staff members include Nial who taught 6 years in Abu Dhabi, Anne who taught in Spain for 6 years, Majella who spent two years teaching in Japan and Aisling who taught in Greece and another foreign country: Cork!
For our former students, you will be interested to learn that Karen is presently traveling and teaching English in Argentina. Jane is in the Canaries practicing her Spanish so she can head to Cuba. Michael is in Australia and Elaine is teaching in Mexico. No doubt they'll return to the LLC when finished their adventures!
Other Activities:
*Cinema - there are 2 cinemas offering 24 screens. Enough to keep any cinema fan happy!
*Theater - we have a small but active theater in the city center offering a wide variety of plays and performances throughout the year.
*Leisure and Fitness Centers- There are several Fitness Centers in Limerick with well-equipped gyms which can be joined on a short-or long-term basis. Full-time adult students automatically receive - for a nominal, per visit fee - guest membership at the leisure center of a 4 stay hotel (Jury's) featuring a heated indoor pool, saunas, jacuzzi, steam room, plunge pool and fully equipped gym and tennis court.
*Hobbies - Do you have a special interest or hobby? Maybe hill-walking, trekking, photography? Limerick offers clubs for all of these and more. Membership is open but would best suit students staying a few months.
*Shopping - branches of all the major stores and shops are to be found in Limerick as well as some local specialty shops not found anywhere else.
*Nightlife - As is usual in Ireland, there is no shortage of pubs in Limerick. Then, after hours, the discos open. Students from many different countries tell us that the Nightlife in Limerick is great. See for yourself!
*Sports - Golf, pitch & putt golf, bowling, horse-riding, swimming, tennis: all can be easily arranged once you are here. If you prefer to watch rather than participate, spectator sports are plentiful: enjoy the excitement of our hurling, Gaelic football, soccer and rugby matches.
*Music- Pubs offer traditional and not so traditional music (like Salsa dancing, for example!) and our concert hall at the University features a varied program from opera to rock stars with everything in between.
Facility Information:
*Host Family accommodation:
We feel all students should spend at least a few weeks with an Irish family upon arrival. It is probably the nicest introduction to a new country. All adult students (17+) have a private room in a lovely home with a warm, caring Irish family. Wherever possible we match students to families based on mutual interests. Our families are known to us personally and most have worked with us for many years. All are inspected annually. We are proud of the welcome our families accord our students. Our families live in a suburb of Limerick, just a 10 minute bus ride from the center.
*Student Apartment Accommodation:
Based just across the river from the city center (about a 10 min walk). You will have a private room with a private shower, sink and toilet in a comfortable, modern apartment. Some apartments have 3 bedrooms, others 4 and 5 bedrooms. All apartments have a cozy living room and up to date kitchen. Apartments are shared, typically, with other foreign students (from our center or foreign students attending the various colleges and universities in Limerick) or with Irish students. (Please note: electricity costs for cooking and heating are not included).
*Bed and Breakfast Guest houses:
Ireland offers a unique type of accommodation called a B&B?.it is a family home but run like a small hotel. The only meal available is breakfast (a big one!) and there are no cooking facilities. A few B&Bs are located in the city center, others are situated just outside the center, about a 15 or 20 minute walk to the school. Prices on request.
*Hotel accommodation: There are many hotels in and around Limerick City. Categories range from 2 Star to 5 Star. Prices on request.
