Established in 1995, Streetsville English is located in a community called Streetsville, nicknamed the “Village in the City” of Mississauga, Ontario. Mississauga was recently chosen as the safest city in Canada for the third year in a row in a national study. Village English is renowned for its excellent English as a Second Language (ESL) training programs along with a homestay program unmatched anywhere in Canada.
Our class size does not exceed 10 and we only accept a maximum of 50 students at any given time. Our students come to us from many countries around the world. Because Streetsville English is a small school, students, teachers and staff become a part of 'family'. This family culture is very evident especially on graduation day of departing student(s) when tears flow very freely from almost everyone present. Streetsville English organizes regular activities after school and participation is usually 100%. It is a common for host families and staff members to invite all the students to their houses for bbq's or parties.
Although, the school is located in a village of a major city, the city centre is only a 10 minute bus ride away. The city of Toronto is only 30 minutes by local public transportation from the school. However, the city of Mississauga has many things to offer to the general public in way of leisure, shopping and sight seeing. The fact that Canada is very multi-cultured is very evident in any major city and Mississauga is no exception. This situation offers a unique opportunity to see and taste first hand the different ethnic favors of this society. Our homestay program is one of the best in Canada.
Finally Streetsville English is an accredited member of CAPLS (Canadian Association of Private Language Schools). This organization works very closely with Industry Canada, a Federal Government department.
Faculty Information:
The school employs teachers who are university graduates with CELTA certified teachers given priority over TESL or TESL Ontario teachers. Our school is CAPLS accredited therefore, standards for curriculum and facilities are strictly adhered to.
Courses:
- General English: School's core studies comprise an integrated approach to learning English grammar with a focus in the four basic skills: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Our approach to teaching English is based on real-life settings. We have a course for every level of interest and budget:
* 20-hr Social: This program has been designed for students who wish to gain some exposure and gain confidence using English in informal and social settings.
* 8:30-11:30AM General English
* 11:30-12:30PM Elective class (this class changes every 2 weeks, in case of the TOEFL module, it lasts 6 weeks)
- 25-hr Conversation: Like the Social Program, this program has been designed for students who wish to communicate well in most English language settings, with an additional and stronger focus on Pronunciation and Fluency.
* 8:30-11:30AM General English
* 11:30-12:30PM Elective class (this class changes every 2 weeks, in case of the TOEFL module, it lasts 6 weeks)
* 12:30-1:15PM Lunch time
* 1:15-2:15PM Conversation
- 30-hr Academic: The Academic Program is for students who need a more extensive program that covers all skills groups. While the focus on improved verbal communication will remain, students will study more in-depth language skills in order to be able to make presentations, write letters, and take examinations in English.
* 8:30-11:30AM General English
* 11:30-12:30PM Elective class (this class changes every 2 weeks, in case of the TOEFL module, it lasts 6 weeks)
* 12:30-1:15PM Lunch time
* 1:15-2:15PM Conversation
* 2:15-3:15PM Academic class
- Deluxe Fluency: This super-intensive course is designed for students who want to make the most of their time in Canada to work hard at mastering the English language. Students will receive fully individualized teaching and will progress quickly and confidently, enabling them to feel comfortable in any English language environment.
* 8:30-11:30AM Grammar
* 11:30-12:30PM Elective class (this class changes every 2 weeks, in case of the TOEFL module, it lasts 6 weeks)
* 12:30-1:15PM Lunch time
* 1:15-2:15PM Conversation
* 2:15-3:15PM Private One-on-One (this class is focused on the special needs of the student)
Other Activities:
We organize activities after class ends. Typically, in the summer months, there is an activity each week. In the winter months, one activity every 2 weeks. However, students can take trips to Quebec city or New York with other companies that Streetsville English has engaged. There are pot lunches very often and Christmas and other 'event' parties are often held at teachers' or staff homes.
Facility Information:
The school is situated on the 2nd floor of a 2-storey 'historic' building in downtown Streetsville. There are 5 classrooms, 1 lunchroom, 3 washrooms, a student computer lab and office space. Internet is free and the school operates from 8.30 AM to 3.30 PM Monday to Friday (closed on public holidays).
Our host families are carefully selected and their residences are inspected to ensure that our standards are met. Infact, most of our host families have been with us since 1995. Host families provide will in most cases, host only 1 student at a time and provide a private room, 3meals a day, 7 days of the week, internet and laundry facilities to their students. It is a prerequisite of each host family to ensure that the student is given all opportunities to experience 'Canadian' customs and festivities.
