Tour itinerary:
Day 1 TRIPOLI
Meet guide on arrival in Tripoli and transfer to city centre hotel. Depending on time of arrival, walking tour in modern Tripoli before dinner.
Day 2 TRIPOLI - SABRATA - TRIPOLI
Morning sightseeing tour of Tripoli inc. National Museum (NB: If you have an afternoon flight on Day 15, we recommend visiting only Tripoli old town this morning and postponing the visit to the National Museum until the morning of Day 15). Continue to the Roman city of Sabrata with its spectacular Colonnaded Theatre, temples and mosaic museum. Return to Tripoli.
Day 3 QASR AL-HAJ - NALUT - GHADAMES
Visit the beautiful 12th century Berber granary qasr (castle) of Qasr al-Haj, chosen as one of the World’s 80 Greatest Treasure in a recent BBC TV series. Continue to the granary castle of Nalut in a spectacular position atop an escarpment. Continue to the World Heritage site of Ghadames for 2 nights.
Day 4 GHADAMES
Sightseeing tour in the enchanting oasis of Ghadames with its unique architecture and labyrinthine passages. Lunch in a richly decorated traditional house. Late afternoon visit to Ra’s al-Ghoul, the remains of an ancient Roman fort, and the sand dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental that border Libya, Algeria and Tunisia.
Day 5 SABHA
Day’s drive south to Sabha via the Hamadat al-Hamra and Shwayrif.
Days 6-10 WADI MATKHANDOUSH - ACACUS
Drive to Murzuk Sand Sea and Wadi Matkhandoush to see ancient petroglyphs. Continue through desert to explore the World Heritage Site of the Acacus with its spectacular scenery and rock art dating back thousands of years. Wild camping with final night at Al-Awainat camp site.
Day 11 GERMA - UBARI SAND SEA & LAKES
Drive to Germa. Visit site of the ancient Garamantian civilisation. Enter Ubari Sand Sea for a thrilling drive over immense sand dunes towards the famous oasis salt lakes of Lake Gabraoun and Lake Umm al-Maa. Swimming and wild camping.
Day 12 UBARI SAND SEA - SABHA
Continue visit to the Ubari Sand Sea before driving to Sabha.
Day 13 GHARYAN
Early start for drive north to Gharyan. Visit troglodyte house and pottery centre in Gharyan, and overnight.
Day 14 LEPTIS MAGNA - VILLA CELINE - TRIPOLI
Excursion to the magnificent Roman city of Leptis Magna with its Theatre, Forum, Baths, Sports Ground, Nymphaeum and Temples. Also visit Villa Celine, home of a wealthy Roman. Continue to Tripoli.
Day 15 TRIPOLI - TRIPOLI AIRPORT
At leisure OR morning visit to National Museum (see Day 2) until transfer to Tripoli International Airport.
