Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Cochin. Pick up by private non A/C taxi at Cochin airport. Transfer to a heritage hotel. Sightseeing in historic Fort Cochin, probably the best preserved history of colonial times eg British bungalows, Jewish synagogue, Portuguese churches. Watch the Chinese fishing nets on the beach landing their catch.
Day 2: Cochin. Sightseeing and shopping in Fort Cochin. Real Kerala antiques which can be shipped, smaller items from all over India. Wander along Spice Street, full of cardamom and pepper warehouses. Optional extra; ferry ride to an island for lunch at an old Dutch palace, now a hotel. Overnight in hotel.
Day 3: Alleppey. Transfer to Alleppey to board a traditional houseboat. A 22 hour private cruise along Kerala's famous backwaters. Watch village life on the river banks eg ladies washing their clothes, men punting by in traditional boats. Very romantic and peaceful. Your own staff of 3 to look after you.
Day 4: Thekkady. Taxi to Thekkady, one of India's best known wild life centres, Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, 777 sq km of jungle. Watch out for bison, barking deer, elephants washing on the waterside at dusk. Overnight at a plantation hotel.
Day 5: Thekkady. At leisure at Thekkady. Visit the Cardamom Hills & Plantations. Overnight at hotel.
Day 6: Kovalam. Taxi to Kovalam. This is a more built-up beach. Watch the fishermen land their catch while they chant their work songs. Overnight at a Kovalam hotel.
Day 7: Kovalam/ Kanyakumari/ Kovalam. Morning at leisure. Optional evening trip to Kanyakumari, The Land's End of India where the three great oceans meet. Gandhi Memorial, island temple, great sunsets. Return to Kovalam hotel.
Day 8: Kovalam. At leisure on the beach.
Day 9: Varkala. Taxi to Varkala, the temple town. Visit the 2000 year old ancient Janardhanaswamy temple, cliffed beaches, naturecare centre, the Papanasam beach. Overnight stay at a hotel in Varkala.
Day 10: Varkala. At leisure.
Day 11: Alleppey. Taxi to Alleppey. Experience a mid-sized Indian town. Lots of hustle and bustle while shopping for silk and gold. Stroll along the beach with the local community in the evening. Not many tourists here. Stay in a luxury heritage Home at the beach.
Day 12: Alleppey. At leisure. Optional extras: Yoga, Astrology, Meditation, Ayurveda.
Day 13: Alleppey. At leisure at Alleppey.
Day 14: Cochin. Transfer to Cochin Airport for departure.
