A tour of the classical Roman and Greek sites of Libya including Sabrata, Leptis Magna Ptolemais, Cyrene and Apollonia plus an excursion to Tobruk to see the sites associated with this famous World War II siege city.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1 TRIPOLI
Arrive Tripoli and transfer to city centre hotel. Depending on time of arrival, walking tour of modern Tripoli before dinner.
Day 2 TRIPOLI - SABRATA - TRIPOLI
Excursion to the Roman city of Sabrata with its stunning Colonnaded Theatre, and to the Janzour catacombs with their tomb paintings.
Day 3 BENGHAZI
Flight to Benghazi. Visit the old town, Souk al-Jareed, ancient Berenice and the World War II Commonwealth Cemetery.
Day 4 TOCRA - PTOLEMAIS - AL-BAYDA or SUSAH
Visit the Greco-Roman sites of Teuchira (Tocra) and Ptolemais (Tolmeita), the latter with its Colonnaded Theatre and vast underground cisterns. Continue to Al-Bayda or Susah for 3 nights.
Day 5 CYRENE
Full day excursion to the stunning Greco-Roman city of Cyrene with its Necropolis, Temple of Zeus, Forum, Agora, House of Jason Magnus and Sanctuary of Apollo.
Day 6 APOLLONIA - RAS AL-HILAL - AL-ATRUN
Morning visit to the ancient city-port of Apollonia with its temples and picturesque seashore theatre. Also visit the Byzantine churches of Ras al-Hilal and Al-Atrun.
Day 7 TOBRUK
Excursion to the famous World War II city of Tobruk. Visit Rommel's bunker, the Knightsbridge, Commonwealth and French cemeteries, the German monument, the remains of the tragic Lady Be Good aeroplane, and the Fig Tree dugout hospital.
Day 8 TOBRUK - DERNA - SUSAH or AL-BAYDA
Continue visit to Tobruk before returning to Susah or Al-Bayda via the coastal town of Derna.
Day 9: SLONTAH - QASR LIBYA - BENGHAZI - TRIPOLI
Return to Benghazi via the eerie pre-Islamic grotto of Slontah, and Qasr Libya with its splendid collection of Byzantine mosaics. Flight to Tripoli.
Day 10 LEPTIS MAGNA - VILLA CELINE - TRIPOLI
Excursion to the magnificent Roman site of Leptis Magna with its Theatre, Forum, Baths, Sports Ground, Nymphaeum and Temples. En route back to Tripoli, visit Villa Celine, home of a wealthy Roman.
Day 11 TRIPOLI
Sightseeing tour of Tripoli including the superb National Museum, Green Square, the 18th century British Consulate, the 17th century French Consulate, historic House of Karamanli, Arch of Marcus Aurelius and the mosques and souks of the old town where lunch will be taken. A visit will also be made to the World War II Commonwealth cemetery.
Day 12 TRIPOLI - TRIPOLI AIRPORT
At leisure until transfer to airport for flight home to London.
