Beginning in Northern Poland, we saunter through cobblestone streets in the UNESCO-protected Old Town of Warsaw, and stop in at historically significant sites like reconstructed churches and cathedrals that once lay decimated in the aftermath of the Second World War. Centuries-old palaces, village houses untouched since the Middle Ages and beautiful landscapes of rolling hills, forests and tranquil lakes fringe our route through Poland, a country that enjoys worldwide acclaim for both its natural and man-made attractions. We then make headway for Lithuania and take time to explore the sights in and around the cosmopolitan village-like city of Vilnius.
Vilnius has over its history been under the rule of the Swedes, Poles, French and Russians and though it is known as a Baroque city, it displays a range of architectural style, including Gothic and Renaissance, to name but two. After visits to a couple of other noteworthy Lithuanian cities and towns to get a taste of the country's history and its people's heritage, we travel through picturesque sceneries, bound for Latvia. Among the cities on our destination list in Latvia is Riga, one of the Eastern Europe's most cosmopolitan and lively cities and enjoy its eclectic architectural mix and the remarkable hospitality of the friendly locals.
Next, we cross into Estonia and explore the important harbor-city of Tallinn, where we meander through a jumble of medieval buildings, turrets and walls in this jewel of the Baltic States. After a stop in Helsinki, Finland, known as 'The Daughter of the Baltic,' and exploration of the sophisticated capital and its many sights, we enjoy a pleasant train journey to the 'Northern Capital' of Russia; the abundant St Petersburg. We spend 13 days traveling across this Eastern European colossus of a country, taking time to admire the major attractions like the Red Square and the Kremlin in Moscow, and the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, but also venturing to the lesser-visited sites of interest to see the 'true' face of Russia. Once our appetites for exploration in Russia are satiated, we take the last dozen days of our tour to discover the many memorable sights in Ukraine, a country which would alone be a reason to spend time in Eastern Europe.
