Mali is a country of dramatic landscape, endless interest and is quite unique. Crossing the River Bani to Djenne we visit the largest mud mosque and building in the world. Across the river is the magnificent Bandiagara Escarpment; all along the ridge are the famed Dogon villages, unique in their design, and best visited on foot. The walking is moderate but it can get very hot. We also spend two full days exploring villages by pinnace (river boat) on the Niger River, take an exciting 4WD ride through the Gourma semi-desert and track the healthy elephant population (in season), plus there's an optional camel ride into the Sahara. To crown it all, we visit Timbuktu, a city that has inspired so many travelers throughout the centuries.
