Your Itinerary
Day 1: Eurostar to Paris
Eurostar from London to Paris with lunch included on board. Transfer to Gare de l’Est and head to Basel. Dinner and overnight Basel.
Day 2: Jura Railway
Narrow-gauge Chemin de Fer de Jura Railway. An ex-Portuguese Mallet locomotive will take us on an exhilarating run to La Chaux de Fonds. Dinner and overnight Basel.
Day 3: Steam Charters in and around Bern
Today’s highlights: chartered steam tour of Bern’s tramways; narrow-gauge Bernese Oberland Railway to Wilderswil; charter on the Schynige Platte Bahn with steam up the 2 foot, 7 inch rack railway to the summit. Dinner and overnight in Interlaken.
Day 4: Brunig Steam
Round-trip journey over Brunig Pass, steaming out of Interlaken along sparkling Lake Brienz to Meiringen, change to a rack-fitted steam locomotive for the long climb over the Brunig Pass to Giswil. Dinner and overnight in Interlaken.
Day 5: Furka Bahn Steam Railway, Brienz Rothorn Bahn
Join Furka rack steam railway at Realp, part of the original Glacier Express route. Enjoy perhaps the most exhilarating steam ride in Switzerland: a two-hour climb towards the Rhone Glacier at Gletsch. Return to Brienz for a vintage train hauled by a steam locomotive up to the superb Brienz Rothorn Bahn to Rothorn Kulm. Overnight Interlaken.
Day 6: Steam to Zermatt
Depart Interlaken by service train via Spiez and the Lötschberg Pass to Brig. At Brig, cross to the meter-gauge platforms; a special steam-hauled train will be waiting with HG 2/3 “Breithorn” and vintage coaches for our journey to Zermatt—another exhilarating ride with steam over the many rack sections. Picnic lunch provided. Take the Gornergratbahn (own expense) with magnificent views of the Matterhorn if the weather is fine.
Day 7: Glacier Express
Join the Glacier Express at Zermatt station. Settle down in first class for a relaxing ride through some of the most fantastic scenery in the world. Enjoy lunch at your seat in the first-class saloons. Dinner and overnight in Chur.
Day 8: Steam to Davos and Filisur
Our special, steam-hauled charter train takes us for a spectacular journey through the Alps. Our locomotive will be a Rhaetian Railway 2-8-0 to Klosters (of royal fame) and through more stunning scenery to Davos, a mountain resort with a funicular railway. Lunch included at the station hotel. We continue our circular steam tour back to Chur. Dinner and overnight in Chur.
Day 9: Eurostar
Morning departure for Basel; board midday train to Paris via Mulhouse and Belford. On arrival at Paris, transfer to Paris Gare du Nord, where we board an early evening Eurostar to London. Dinner served at seat.
