Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Krems - Spitz
Individual arrival at Krems, the wine-growing village situated in the Wachau Valley. The Wachau is the most beautiful stretch of the Danube Valley, marked by vineyards, ruins and rolling hills. Krem’s history is more than 1000 years old. Check-in to the first class Hotel Steigenberger, the “country house in the vineyards”. The hotel is surrounded by vineyards, and offers a splendid view over the Danube valley. At the hotel you will receive a personal folder containing detailed information on the program of the next 3 days as well as brochures and maps of the area. At 1:30 p.m. meet with the local guide, a specialist in the area, and particularly in wine and the Art of wine-growing and wine-making. Travel by car to Spitz, an old market village on the left bank of the Danube dating back to the Celtic times. Board a vessel in Spitz and while cruising downstream toward Krems, enjoy an introduction to “Austrian Wine” while tasting some wines from the area. Arrive back in Krems at 3:25 p.m. You have the possibility of discovering the picturesque old town at your own pace. Refer to information that can be found in your personal folder for some helpful tips of where to stop and what to see. At 7:30 p.m. a delicious 4-course meal will be served at the restaurant of the hotel. Each course is accompanied by a wine growing locally, complementing the food. Details on the various wines will be given by the sommelier of the hotel.

Day 2: Melk – Duernstein
After a sumptuous buffet-breakfast (which is served on the terrace of the hotel, if weather permits) take a short drive upstream to Melk. Tour the Abbey of Melk, a masterpiece of Baroque Architecture, with its impressive library. The Abbey stands high on a bluff overlooking the Danube Valley. Lunch can be taken at the restaurant of the Abbey or in one of the small inns along the Danube. Continue on to Duernstein, a little town enclosed within a triangle of walls and towers, the walls winding up to the ruined castle. Richard the Lionhearted was imprisoned here in the 12th century. At 2:30 p.m. visit the vineyard of the Baeuerl Family, and taste the wines of the Weingut Baeuerl. Return to Krems. At 7:30 p.m. a taxi will pick you up at the reception of the hotel and take you to Joching for a dinner with local specialties at the Restaurant Prandtauerhof. Each course will be complimented with a regional wine. Return to the hotel by taxi; overnight at the Hotel Steigenberger.

Day 3: Langenlois - Rohrendort
After breakfast at the hotel depart from Krems and head north to Austria’s prime white-wine growing area, the Kamptal Region. In Langenlois, visit the Loisium, recently built after the plans of New York Architect Steven Hall. You will enter and experience a completely different "world of wines" with the help of an audio-guide in English. This is followed by a winetatsting at the vinothek and a light lunch. Continue on to Gobelsburg Castle (Schloss Gobelsburg), dating back to the early 11th century. Schloss Gobelsburg with its winecellars and vineyards is internationally renowned for its white wines. A tasting of the award-winning wines of Schloss Gobelsburg is followed by a walk through the vineyards with a special guide of the estate. He will take you along the educational path through the vineyards explaining the wine-growing in this area and the work of the winegrowers. After the visit to Schloss Gobelsburg return to Krems, but not before stopping in Rohrendorf to visit the estate of the Moser Family and to taste their wines. Dinner tonight is on your own – you will find recommendations on restaurants and country inns in your personal information folder.

Day 4: Krems
