The original community, famous for its vibrant urban culture of jazz, journalism, gansterism and shebeens, was also home to excellent church-owned schools, religious communities and political organizations. After forced removals most of the buildings were bulldozed, but Christ the King Church, the St Joseph's Home, and Dr Xuma's house are remaining landmarks incorporated in our tour.
The Trevor Huddleston Memorial Centre is based at St Joseph's Home, and takes forward the work of Father Huddleston and the Anglican church in Sophiatown. The Centre is home to a small but lovely museum depicting the history of Sophiatown - much of this gathered through a participative heritage project involving young and old people, from the present and historic communities.
