The quiet roads of Nova Scotia's South Shore wind through a coastal paradise of fishing villages, secluded coves, antique boat building and art shops and some of the nicest white sand beaches in North America. Captain Kidd may have buried his treasure here (the bottom of the Oak Island's Treasure Pit has not yet been reached), and the area is still a magnet for people seeking a different sort of treasure - fresh air, clean water, and friendly people.
For and 8 day Kayak Bike and Hike trip you can combine this adventure with a sea-kayak weekend either before or after this trip. We'll look after the transition from one to the other for you.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: The tour begins with an optional 3:00 pm pickup in Halifax (at your hotel or the Waverley Inn on Barrington Street), for a half-hour transfer to Hubbards. Lodging: Anchorage House & Cottages, Hubbards. Includes: (D)
Day 2: 40 miles/60km. The cycling begins on the quiet roads around the Aspotogan Peninsula. Today’s ride, unlike most of the rest of the week, has a few short hills. See a fairytale castle, pass through fishing villages of Blandford, Aspotogan and Northwest Cove, and by the beach at Bayswater; make a side trip to see where the old whaling station used to operate in "New" Harbor. Enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch at Bayswater Beach, then return to the village of Hubbards, or continue to the yachting center of Chester, in time to explore independent dining options. Breakfast is included. Lunch is included on guided trips only; Lodging: Anchorage House & Cottages, Hubbards. Includes: (B, L)
Day 3: 11, 27 or 33 miles/17, 43 or 53 km + options. Today starts with a 20 minute van transfer to Chester for croissants and coffee, unless last night’s lodging was in Chester. From there, cycle along the shore of Mahone Bay past Oak Island to Lunenburg, stopping for an independent lunch or shopping at the artisan's outlets in Mahone Bay. Arrive in Lunenburg in time to explore the architecture, galleries, fisheries museum and associated ships on the waterfront of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. More cycling is available on the locally famous cycling route to Blue Rocks. Breakfast is included. Options for lunch abound in both Mahone Bay and Lunenburg, and you are free to exercise your whims. Dinner is included on guided trips only. Lodging: Bluenose Lodge, Lunenburg. Includes: (B, L)
Day 4: 27 miles/43km + options. Leave Lunenburg for morning exploration of the seaside hamlets of Rose Bay, Hirtle's Beach, Kingsburg and Riverport on the way to the LaHave Ferry. Stop if you like to visit the sea-caves reached through underground tunnels at the Ovens Park. Savour your independent lunch at the sweet-smelling LaHave Bakery on the other side of the ferry before heading off to Crescent and Risser's Beaches. Follow a saltwater swim with a rinse in a freshwater natural whirlpool then ride back to Lunenburg in time for an independent dinner. Breakfast is included. Lodging: Bluenose Lodge, Lunenburg. Includes: (B)
Day 5: 56 or 68 miles/91 or 110km. Guided groups can have shorter options with van support. Cross the LaHave ferry again for morning exploration of more seaside hamlets: Broad Cove, Vogler's Cove, Little Harbour, and Cherry Hill Beach, before a picnic lunch (guided trips only) in Port Medway or Beach Meadows. Spend the afternoon cycling through the fishing town of Liverpool to White Point Beach Lodge, where you can stroll the white sand of the beach, swim in ocean, outdoor or indoor pool, or soak in the hot tub before dinner. Breakfast is included. Lunch and Dinner are included on guided trips only. Lodging: White Point Beach Lodge, White Point. Includes: (B, L, D)
Day 6: 5 miles/8km hike. Optional 35km ride.
