The mysterious, mist shrouded Tepuis that inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to write about the “Lost World” are some of the oldest rock formations on earth. Rising several thousand feet above the surrounding plains of Venezuela’s Gran Sabana the near vertical, rose-colored cliffs of these table-top mountains, off which sparkling waterfalls plunge into a dense ring of tropical forest, are a dramatic and inspiring sight.
Isolated from each other and towering over the Savannah these fascinating mesas are biological wonders, each developing its own unique flora and fauna, which often exist nowhere else in the world. Come join us for a Jeep tour in this fascinating landscape.
Your Itinerary:
Day 1: Puerto Ordaz - El Dorado - Indian Camp
Early in the morning we start our excursion from Puerto Ordaz, one of South America's most modern and important industrial cities. The last details of our journey are discussed during our meeting; later on we climb into our jeeps to set off on the long trip to the Gran Sabana. A stretch leads us through the legendary mining areas of El Dorado, with its famous prison camps where Henry Charriere (well-known as “Papillion”) did not spend a pleasant stay, and the rubber seeker's cities of Tumeremo and Guasipati.
Afterwards, we enter a jungle area with several nameless mining sites. In the afternoon we will arrive at our camp. The camp is built in an Indian settlement where the locals will host us for the night. After having settled down we shall visit a gold mine and return to the camp. We will have supper and stay overnight. L/ D.
**This tour can also begin in Sta. Elena or Ciudad Bolivar.
Days 2-3: Waterfalls - River Excursions
This track shows you the world of the Pemon Indians, the tepuis of the “The Lost World” which tower up to the sky, breath-taking waterfalls, rapids, and Indian settlements. We head for the waterfalls Kama, Meru, Arapan Meru, Yuruani Meru, Karo Paru, Aponwao and many more. At each of these waterfalls you will have the opportunity to take a refreshing bath. There are also one to two hour-long river-excursions by boat, as well as adventurous trails we will cover by jeep. We will spoil you with top-class food. Icy beer and refreshing drinks set the scene for a relaxing atmosphere. B/ L/ D.
Day 4: End of Services
After our last breakfast together, we start our trip back to the civilization. We will visit sites missed on the way down to Santa Elena. Around five o’clock in the afternoon we shall arrive in Puerto Ordaz. B/ L.
