At your hotel you will receive a private rental car, which you will drive across picturesque villages, past waterfalls, hot springs, geysers, and ancient Icelandic sights. Explore lava formations, fjords, and icebergs during this unforgettable one week adventure vacation.
Your Itinerary:
Day 1: Fly bus (Airport Bus) transfer from Keflavík Airport to accommodation in Reykjavik. Overnight at Hotel Loftleidir or similar.
Day 2: Today's highlights are Þingvellir National Park, Almannagjá gorge, Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir hot-spring area. The great waterfall Skógafoss, Mýrdalsjökull glacier and Dyrhólaey. Overnight in Hotel Edda Vik or similar. Optional: Snowmobile tour on Mýrdalsjökull glacier.
Day 3: Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Skaftafell National Park, the glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón and Höfn. Overnight at Vatnajokull Fosshotel or similar in Hofn. Optional: Boat tour on Jökulsárlón, Ice climbing in Skaftafell area.
Day 4: Through the scenic Eastern fjords to Egilsstaðir. Overnight at Herad Icelandair Hotel or similar in Egilsstadir. Optional: Boat tour to Papey Island, the puffins' summer nesting ground, Visit Petra's famous stone collection at Stöðvarfjörður.
Day 5: Across the Möðrudalsöræfi highlands to the magnificent waterfall Dettifoss. Visit the magnificent horseshoe-shaped canyon Ásbyrgi and continue to Tjörnes peninsula and Húsavík. Overnight at Husavik Fosshotel or similar. Optional: Whale watching from Húsavík.
Day 6: Lake Mývatn area. Explore highlights like the river Laxá, Dimmuborgir, the pseudo craters at Skútustaðir, Námaskarð, Krafla. Drive from Lake Mývatn to Goðafoss, Akureyri and Skagafjörður. Overnight at Akureyri Edda Hotel or similar.
Day 7: Drive through the historical region of Skagafjörður renowned for horse breeding. There is the option of visiting the old farmstead of Glaumbær a great example of old Icelandic architecture. Continue to the bay of Húnaflói and across Holtavörðuheiði plateau, returning to Reykjavík in the late afternoon. Another option is to travel across the barren Kjölur highlands (4WD needed, track open from mid-June), to the geothermal oasis at Hveravellir and onwards to Reykjavik. Optional: River rafting in Skagafjörður, horse riding in Skagafjörður.
Day 8: Departure by fly bus.
