The Natural Park of Friulian Dolomites and nearby mountains that we will visit during this tour is situated on the mountain range towering over the Western Friulian Plain bordered by the Tagliamento and Piave rivers. It covers 36.950 hectares of the most beautiful land in the whole region. The dolomite peaks and the splendid natural settings make this area a real paradise for excursions, trekking and mountaineering. The landscape is characterized by dolomite rocks and long and narrow valleys. The Monfalconi chain with the Campanile di Val Montana (Mounatin Valley Towerbell), which became the symbol of the park, the highland meadows, at “Campoross”, the pastures at Malga Senon and the peaceful solitude of the Meduna Channel make a tour of this parka unique and unforgettable experience.
The complex orography of this area reduced the human impact and establishment of new settlements. This allowed a natural conservation, also thanks to the daily activity of the locals. There aren’t tourism services and hotels for mass tourism in the park and surrounding areas. This guarantees the presence of selected visitors, among trekkers, nature lovers and alpinists. The refugees where we will stay are all run and maintained by people from the local communities. The area does not offer easy roads or towns. This helps to keep such a high biodiversity and wilderness that it is hard to find a similar untouched environment on the whole Alps and Pre-Alps chain.
As extended valleys, with no roads or villages, penetrate the top of the mountains enhancing the park at wilderness degree, it is easy to meet, along your path, groups of ibexes, chamois, marmots and the golden eagle (symbol of the nature Park). Your expert naturalist guide will lead you for the whole tour. We will likely see several bird species, mammals and numerous flowering plants. By the end of the tour, participants will have an intimate knowledge of the Dolomites biomes in the less populated, developed and touristy part of them. Join us on an unforgettable journey into some of the most breathtaking mountainous areas in Europe.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival in Trieste, Transfer to the Dolomites
On arrival at Trieste airport, meet your guide and start our 2,5 hour transfer by private vehicle to Forni di Sopra, our starting point in the Dolomites Natural Park. We will drive on the modern highway that crosses the region Friuli - Venezia Giulia, the most eastern region of Italy. Leaving the airport we will pass flat rural areas and admire the ever changing landscape, the small medieval towns on the hills, few castles far away in the countryside and the abundance of green all around. We will pass pleasant hills and breathtaking sceneries as we reach the mountains.
When we will leave the highway we will be already in Carnia, the mountainous north-eastern part of the region where a good portion of the Dolomites Natural Park is located. We will enjoy a scenic winding road through typical villages in the last 20 km (13 miles) of our journey. On arrival in Forni di Sopra we will start a 40 minute walk to reach Rifugio Giaf at 1400 m. The refugee offers accommodation in rooms of 2,4,6 and 10 beds. We will have dinner and your guide will introduce the tour.
Day 2: To Rifugio Padova
After an early breakfast we will depart for our day of trekking in the Dolomites. We will walk up to 2,043 m reaching Forcella Scodovacca and we will continue for a small break down to 1500 m. We will continue our trekking in the beautiful valley Cadin D’arade to reach Forcella Monfalcon di Forni at the altitude of 2,309 m. We will enjoy our packet lunch that we received at the Rifugio Giaf this morning and continue back down to reach our destination of today, the Rifugio Padova located at 1287 m. Here we will rest and enjoy the beautiful view before. Dinner and overnight on site.
Day 3: To Rifugio Tita Barba
After an early breakfast and receiving our packet lunch for the day, we will leave Rifugio Padova and start our nice walk that we estimate to least from 6 to 7 hours. Part of our trekking will be in the forest along a small mountain river where we will stop to collect spring water before continuing to the summer pastures. We will take a small break before continuing to the highest point for the day, Forcella Spe at 2049 m, after lunch. We will continue hiking down to reach our destination for today, the rifugio Tita Barba at 1,821 m. You will love the small wooden cabin and the beautiful and peaceful landscape all around.
Day 4: To Rifugio Pordenone
After our early breakfast we will start our beautiful day of trekking, estimated to least about 8 to 9 hours. We will walk through the forest then reach Forcella Pian dei Laris at 2,049 m. The scenery changes to alpine meadows-rock and screes. We will continue up. The trail is not well defined, but our expert guide will lead as to the scenic Forcella Vedorcia at 2,234 m, a narrow crack between dolomite rocks. On route we will admire the peak Cima Cadin di Vedorcia ad from the fork we can enjoy a breathtaking scenery of the Dolomites.
We will continue down to Casera Cavalet at 1,995 m where we will stop for lunch and relax near a small river. We will continue up to For Val dei Frassin at 2,209 m. From here we will walk down dropping to 924 m. and reaching the valley Val Cimoliana (Pian Fontana). We will walk about 1 km, 0.7 mi, along the valley to a small mountain farm for a cold beer or glass of wine and some locally hand made cheese. We are only 30 minute away from our destination, Rifugio Pordenone at 1,249 m, where we will spend two nights.
Day 5: A Loop on the Dolomites
We will collect our packet lunch after the early breakfast and will leave the Rifugio Pordenone where we will be back this afternoon. We estimate about 6 hours trekking activity for today. We will walk up to Forcella Savalons at 1,976 m that offers a beautiful panorama on the Dolomites. From here we will walk 20 minutes down to the alpine hut Casera Bregolina Grande at 1,859 m. We will have lunch at the hut with a good opportunity to spot some marmots nearby. Return the same way to Rigugio Pordenone. We will have dinner at the rifugio.
Day 6: To Rifugio Pacherini
After breakfast we will leave for our journey through the Dolomites and we won’t take the packet lunch with us! The journey for today is estimated to be 6 to 7 hours. After our delicious meal we will continue our walk to reach Forcella Val di Brica at 2,088 m. and then to Forcella Val D’Inferno 2,175 m. On the way it is possible to meet some ibex and take beautiful pictures of typical flowers of the Alps, especially gentians, flower plants belonging to the Gentian family (Gentianaceae). Their roots are used in this region to flavor the locally produced spirit, grappa. You can ask in almost any bar in northern Friuli Venezia Giulia for a “grappa alla genziana”, if you want to taste it. We will continue down to Rifugio Pacherini at 1,587 m where we will have dinner and stay for the night.
Day 7: To Rifugio Pussa
