Notes:

- Accommodation Information:

* Great Rift Valley Lodge

Perched on the panoramic shoulder of the Eburu Escarpment, overlooking the sparkling waters of Lake Naivasha and the sweeping floor of the world’s largest valley, the Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort enjoys one of the most spectacular views in all of Africa. Just one-and-a-half hours’ drive from Nairobi (or a 30-minute flight to our own airstrip), the lodge is the perfect stopover on a safari to the Maasai Mara or the sights of western Kenya. As well as one of Kenya’s newest and most stunning championship golf course, the lodge offers exciting walking and horse-riding safaris in the Eburu forests, and mesmerizing ‘trips back in time’ along a string of volcanic lakes blessed with the world’s most prolific and diverse bird life.

- Service Information:

* Giraffe Center

The Rothschild giraffe lost much of their natural habitat in western Kenya and faced extinction. In 1974, two highly endangered Rothschild giraffe were moved onto the estate where their future generations have thrived and live today. Jock and Betty founded the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW). The Giraffe Centre (AFEW Kenya) was built on the property so that Kenyan school children could learn conservation/ecology and feed giraffe eyeball to eyeball! Visitors touring Nairobi have a chance to visit and pay an entrance to the Giraffe Centre.

Profits go to various projects in Kenya. Betty's son Rick has led AFEW USA and AFEW Kenya since 1983. When Jock died in 1984, and Betty returned to the USA she opened her house - now The Giraffe Manor - to visitors. The Giraffe Manor has been run by Rick and his wife Bryony over the years, initially as a fund raiser for AFEW.

- Location and park information:

* Samburu Game Reserves

Lying in the lower curve of the dry northern Kenya region, the three reserves of Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba make up a combined area of over 235sq. km, and are well worth a visit to view an ecosystem that spans arid terrains, hills, shrubland and grassland. The main water source, the Uaso Nyiro River, feeds the riverine forest and swamp. The patches of forest and doum palm dotting the landscape provide an ideal setting for exuberant primates, sombre hippo and sedate crocodile. Elephant families visit the river’s shallows to give themselves a shower or immerse themselves totally in the invigorating, cool water.

The exciting animal life also includes game only seen north of the equator, namely grevy’s zebra, beisa oryx and reticulated giraffe. Other residents are gerenuk gazelle, the Somali ostrich, ‘big five’, and more common savanna game. As the name implies, this is Samburu land. The Samburu are a colorful tribal people who have lived in harmonious accord with nature over the years, maintaining cultural conservation practices based on a deep respect for the ecosystem.

* Naivasha

Lake Naivasha is a beautiful freshwater lake, fringed by thick papyrus. The lake is almost 13kms across, but its waters are shallow with an average depth of five meters. Much of the lake is surrounded by forests of the yellow barked Acacia Xanthophlea, known as the yellow fever tree. These forests abound with bird life, and Naivasha is known as a world class birding destination. The waters of the lake draw a great range of game to these shores. Giraffes wander among the acacia, Buffalo wallow in the swamps and Colobus monkeys call from the treetops while the Lakes large hippo population sleep the day out in the shallows. Hell's Gate National Park lies beside the lake.

This Park was named for its pair of massive red tinged cliffs framing a geothermal active interior of steam vents and bubbling springs. The park is home to a profusion of plains game and bird life. Walking is permitted, making it ideal for hiking, biking, and rock climbing. Boat trips on the lake are widely available, and is a great way to spend an afternoon or morning. Sunsets are always stunning, with the haunting call of a Fish Eagle high over the Lake bringing the day to a perfect end.

* Masai Mara

Justifiably one of the most famous reserves in Africa, its’ dominant feature are the great rolling plains of savanna grasslands, which sustain the greatest variety of wildlife in Africa and indeed in the world. The concentration of game is at its highest from July through October when the Mara is host to the annual migration of more than a million wildebeest. However, game viewing is excellent year round with giraffe, buffalo, zebra, eland, hartebeest and Thompson’s gazelle offering a rich choice for the predators lion, leopard and cheetah. It should be noted, however, that during the rainy season, the grass is fairly tall in some areas, which may affect visibility and restrict game drives slightly.

The Maasai people, after whom the park is named, are nomadic. While on game drives, you will often notice young tribesmen herding their cattle amongst the plains game. They are colourfully attired, usually wrapped in bright red cloths, and armed with spears.
