Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive at your luxury accommodation at Moonlight Retreat on Moonlight Head and settle in with afternoon tea, pre-walk briefing and dinner.
Day 2: You are transferred to the fishing and holiday village of Apollo Bay. Your walk commences at the Visitor Information Centre or Marengo. Today you will traverse golden beaches, cool temperate rainforest gullies and encounter the giants of the Australian forest - Mountain Ash which can reach over 100 m (320 feet) in height. As you approach Blanket Bay you may encounter a Koala and see remnants of the old holiday shacks removed in the early 1990's.
Day 3: This morning you are transferred to Cape Otway where you will see Koalas. You commence today’s walk at the historic Blanket Bay where during the 1800s and 1900's the supply ship for the Cape Otway Lighthouse landed supplies twice yearly, subject to weather. From Blanket Bay you walk around Cape Otway past the oldest remaining lighthouse on the Australian mainland. You can take an optional tour of the grounds and learn the history of this most significant light station. The grounds are also home to the original Telegraph Station linking the mainland and Tasmania via King Island and also World War II radar bunker which protected Bass Strait. From here you walk out to Station Beach, a stunning stretch of golden sand and on to the Aire River Estuary.
Day 4: Today you are transferred to the Aire River where you will see water birds and usually Wallabies on the track heading to Castle Cove. From Castle Cove you will walk to Johanna Beach past Dinosaur Cove, significant for the discovery of Polar Dinosaurs in the 1980' by Dr Tom Rich and Prof. Patricia Vickers-Rich and their teams from the Museum of Victoria and Monash University. Johanna Beach is another wonderful beach of golden sand and from here you head inland up the Old Coach Road to Milanesia Track and then to Milanesia Gate.
Day 5: A very short transfer to Milanesia Gate, from here you head down to Milanesia Beach, a charming very remote beach with a little cottage nestled next to the stream. It was built as a memorial to a politician’s son killed in World War 1 and is still used by the family for holidays. From Milanesia you head past Bowker Point to Cape Volney passing arguably some of the best coastal scenery in Australia and rarely surpassed anywhere in the world. A break at the Ryan Den campsite is worth it for the view alone, it also make a great morning tea or lunch stop. Then its on to Moonlight Head past some very interesting natural sand sculptures to Moonlight Retreat for afternoon tea. Then on to the Gable Lookout and across the old Moonlight Head Racecourse to the top of the steps to Wreck Beach to complete today’s walk.
Day 6: Your final day starts at Wreck Beach, here you will descend the 366 steps and then you will pass the remains of the anchors and windlass from the Marie Gabrielle wrecked in 1869 and then an anchor recovered from the Fiji one of many wrecks along the coast in 1869. From here you clamber over a small rocky outcrop onto Moonlight Beach where the semi precious Moonlight Agate may be found and then a reasonably steep climb up from the Beach to Devils Kitchen - a visit to the camp site is worthwhile for the view from the toilet. Then continue to the join the Old Coach road, where you will see abundant Grass Trees, in flower in season with spectacular spikes up to 3 m (10 feet) high. You will pass the small township of Princetown which may be accessed via a boardwalk through the wetland, great for an ice cream or hot coffee. Finally you head up on to the cliff tops after a relatively short walk through coastal heath past Clifton Beach you will see your final destination the world famous 12 Apostles. You will be met at the end of the walking trail and transferred to visit the 12 Apostles and then returned to your accommodation at Moonlight Head.
