Your Itinerary:
Day 1: Ushuaia. From Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, we sail along the Beagle Channel and south across the Drake Passage to the South Shetland Islands. Here we can visit Penguin Island on the southern shore of King George Island, before going on to Hannah Point, with its Elephant Seals and many different species of penguins and other seabirds. The M/V Aleksey Maryshev and Grigoriy Mikheev are modern and comfortable research vessels of the Hydro-graphic Institute in St. Petersburg. They were built in 1990 in Finland, and were designed with an ice-strengthened hull, perfect for the polar seas. The 210-foot vessels is powered by two 1700-horsepower diesel engines, and is capable of speeds of 14 knots. She has a good anti-roll system, a range of 70 days independent operation and is ISM certified. Manned by an enthusiastic Russian crew of around 20, all highly experienced in ice navigation. Russian captains are recognized experts in polar navigation.
All our international expedition leaders and lecturers are highly knowledgeable, helpful and dedicated to the protection of the environment. The ships have a large bridge (where you are almost always welcome) and good open-deck viewing areas. She carries a full complement of Zodiac craft, excellent for landings and wildlife viewing opportunities in otherwise inaccessible areas. Excellent cuisine prepared by international chefs is served in the dining room, which also acts as the lecture room. Other public areas include a lounge and bar, small library, infirmary and sauna. The "Aleksey Maryshev" and "Grigoriy Mikheev" provide accommodation for 46 travelers in comfortable twin and superior cabins. On specific Polar Circle trips we can also offer Scuba diving to experienced dry-suit divers, a unique chance to explore the fascinating underwater kelp woods, ice floes and marine wildlife of the Antarctic Peninsula.
Days 2-3: Drake Passage. Spend two days sailing through the Drake Passage. Near the South Shetland Islands, you will get a glimpse of the first icebergs. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Days 4–9: Polar Circle. At Deception Island, we will try to land at Baily Head home to a colony of ten thousands of Chinstrap Penguins. Deception itself is a sub ducted crater, which opens into the sea, creating a natural harbor for the ship. Here we find hot springs, an abandoned whaling station, thousands of Cape pigeons and many Dominican gulls, Brown and South Polar Skuas and Antarctic Terns. Wilson’s Storm Petrels and Black-bellied Storm Petrels nest in the ruins of the whaling station in Whalers Bay. Good walkers may hike from Baily Head over the ridge of the crater into Whalers Bay, while our ship braves its entrance into the crater through the spectacular Neptune´s Bellow into the ring of Deception Island. On our way to the south sailing through the Gerlache Strait we will have great chances to see many Humpback Whales and Minke Whales.
In Neko Harbour and Paradise Bay with its myriad icebergs and deep cut fjords, we have the opportunity to set foot on the Antarctic Continent. We shall have the opportunity for zodiac cruising between the icebergs in the inner parts of the fjords. We sail through the spectacular Lemaire Channel to Petermann Island offering Adelie Penguins and Blue-eyed Shags. We also try to land at Pleneau Island with Elephant Seals and fair chances to encounter Humpback, Minke and Fin Whales. We head south along the Argentine Islands to Crystal Sound, south of the polar circle. The landscape is very impressive with very high mountains and huge glaciers. At the Fish Islands we land at one of the southernmost Adelie Penguin and Blue-eyed Shag colonies in the Antarctic Peninsula. At Detaille Island, south of the Polar Circle, in Crystal Sound we reach probably our farthest south. Sailing north through Neumayer Channel and Gerlache Strait, we arrive at Inverleith Harbour, where we may have our last zodiac cruises of the voyage. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Days 10-11: Drake Passage. Sail back through the Drake Passage. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 12: Disembark. After breakfast disembark in Ushuaia. Includes: (B).
