Itinerary for the Christmas Serengeti Expedition 2009 (Tanzania)

Everybody comes together at Camp Africa in Louis Trichardt (F) (RSA) on the evening of 15 December. The first dinner of the expedition will be served on this evening.

DAY 1 – Wednesday, 16 Dec – ± 410 km:
Leave early in the morning and cross into Zimbabwe at Beitbridge border post. Drive via Mwenezi to Masvingo where camp will be set up for the night.

DAY 2 – 17 Dec – ± 80 km:
Visit Zimbabwe ruins. The overnight stop will be at Lake Mutirikwi that has neat and clean ablutions.

DAY 3 – 18 Dec – ± 450 km:
Leave early and drive to Chinhoyi via Gweru and Chegutu. Visit the Chinhoyi Cave (Zimbabwe) before setting up camp.

DAY 4 – 19 Dec – ± 410 km:
Cross over into Zambia at Chirundu. Camp at Eureka Campsite on the outskirts of Lusaka (F). The ablutions at Eureka Camp are neat and clean. There is a swimming pool and bar. Impala and zebra graze in the camp at night. The banks will be visited to exchange USD to Zambian Kwatcha.

DAY 5 – 20 Dec – ± 550 km:
Drive to Chipata (P) (Zambia) and overnight at Mama-Rula Campsite, about 3 km west of Chipata. The ablutions are neat and tidy. There is also a bar.

Day 6,7 21st to 22nf Dec: ± 525 km

Drive through the border and overnight on the banks of Lake Malawi near Mkondowe (Malawi). The facilities are clean and basic. Spend an extra day relaxing on the shores of Lake Malawi. There are various places of interest, e.g. the Manchewe Falls, the Old Stone House and the Khondowe Rock Shelter, which may all be visited in or near Livingstonia. There is a magnificent view of the Livingstonia Mountains 80 km across Lake Malawi.

Day 8 23 Dec: ± 595 km. Leave early in the morning for Tanzania that is just south of Iringa (F). The facilities and service are magnificent and a welcome sight.

Day 9,10,11,12 24th to 27th Dec: ± 555 km

Drive to Dar-es-Salaam (F). There are basic facilities and good security here. Those interested may join in on the Christmas festivities of Christmas Eve at a local hotel and then leave for Zanzibar on Christmas Day. The expedition guide(s) remains to keep an eye on the vehicles and equipment. Tours, etc. can be arranged for the group while on Zanzibar by one of our agents. All self drive travellers present at the campsite on 25 and 26 December stay at own expense, no meals provided on these days.

Zanzibar is an acclaimed World Heritage Site. At least one night’s stay on Zanzibar is recommended to do the spice and slave-trade tours on the island. A tour of Stonetown usually includes the slave trade, the ‘House of Wonders’ and the birthplace of Freddie Mercury (the lead singer of the rock group Queen), amongst other places of interest. A visit to the endangered Red Colobus Monkey in Jozani Forest is also recommended.

Day 13, 28 Dec: ± 385 km. Drive via Bagamoya (P) to a riverside campsite with very basic but clean facilities.

Day 14, 15, 16, 17 29th Dec 2009 to 01st Jan 2010: ± 405 km (excluding game viewing)

Drive via Arusha (F) and set up camp at Kudu Camp for the next four (4) nights. The facilities are neat. The road has been tarred to the gate of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. A stop will be made in Arusha (F) for replenishing stocks. Those interested may join in on the Old Year’s Eve festivities at Kudu Camp and/or in Karatu. No meals will be provided on New Year’s Day for self drive travellers.

For those interested, trips can be made into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area on a daily basis. Drive into the Ngorongoro Crater for game viewing. The Ngorongoro Crater is 16 to 19 km across and has an area of 265 km2; the floor lies about 610 m below the rim. Most of the animals are in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area during the months of December and January. Game drives can be undertaken in this area up to the Naba Hill Gate – the entrance to the Serengeti National Park. Other activities include visits to the famous Olduvai Gorge as well as the Embagai Crater amongst others.

Day 18, 02nd Jan: ± 405 km. Drive via Arusha (F) to the riverside campsite - a stop will again be made in Arusha (F) to replenish stocks.

Day 19, 03rd Jan: ± 670 km. Leave early in the morning and drive through to Isimala, a Stone Age site, may be visited if time allows.

Day 20, 04th Jan: ± 410 km. Drive through to Mbeya where we will stay and eat in the hotel at own cost. There is a swimming pool.

Day 21,22 05th to 06th Jan: ± 430 km

Leave Mbeya and drive through the border post at Tunduma (Tanzania / Zambia) to Kapishya Hot Springs and Shiwa Ngandu or “Africa House” as it is better known. Spend an extra day relaxing at the hot springs. Optional activities include a visit to the main house at Shiwa Ngandu and a walk to a waterfall.

DAY 23 – 07 Jan – ± 145 km:
Drive to Forest Inn Campsite near Mkushi. The facilities are good. A bar and restaurant are available.

DAY 24 – 08 Jan – ± 325 km:
Drive to Eureka Camp just south of Lusaka (F) (Zambia).

DAY 25 – 09 Jan – ± 310 km:
We leave early and drive to Chinhoyi (Zimbabwe).

DAY 26 – 10 Jan – ± 410 km:
Drive to Masvingo. The farewell dinner and party will be enjoyed by all in the evening.

DAY 27 – Monday, 11 Jan – ± 310 km
Cross the border at Beitbridge into RSA where the expedition ends. All are welcome to overnight at Camp Africa in Louis Trichardt before venturing home. Louis Trichardt is approximately another 110 km from Beitbridge.

The round trip is approximately 7,350 km (excluding extra game drives).

Estimated Costs for The Christmas Serengeti Expedition 2009
Note: This list has been drawn up for the benefit of those choosing to travel self drive, to give you an idea of all the estimated costs involved when going on such an expedition. Although we have tried to cover all associated costs which we have come across through experience, the tour operator will not take responsibility for other costs that maybe required, e.g. the increase in the costs of the camping and entry fees at parks, etc. The estimated costs are as follows.

Prices:

Tour price Self drive, for the entire 23-day expedition:
- R 11,400 per person over 16 years
- R 5,200 for children 8 to 16 years (inclusive)
- Children under the age of 8 years ride along for free.

Note: Everything as listed on our Standard Services is included in this price, except for the meals on 25 December (Christmas Day); 26 December (Day of Goodwill) and 01 January (New Year’s Day).
