You will be personally looked after by our man in Riga, Ivo. Ivo has many years of experience in tourism and is passionate about his home country. You will be based in the capital of Riga so you will have plenty of time to explore the delights of this beautiful, vibrant and historic city, and visit its Old Town, Art Nouveau district and experience its strong Russian influences. On your second day you will enjoy a three hour walking tour of the Old Town. This is an excellent way to get your bearings and start to discover the city. Then we have organised three day trips visiting different parts of the country.
The three day trips encompass visits to the regal Rundale and Jelgava Palaces, the medieval Cesis and Turaida Castles and the modern Latvian Film Studios, finishing off with an afternoon visiting the fishing villages of Jurmala. Each tour departs at 0900 and returns to the hotel at 1730 giving you an interesting full day with ample time to freshen up and then explore the delights of Riga in the evening. This is free time for you. However our man will happily recommend places to eat and visit in Riga. We can also book opera and ballet tickets for you upon request.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive at Riga Airport and transfer to Riga, the biggest city in the Baltic States where you will check into your 4* Hotel in the Art Nouveau area for your five night stay on a bed and breakfast basis. Over night: 4* Hotel in Riga.
Day 2: AM: You will be met at reception in your hotel for a three hour walking tour of Riga including the Art Nouveau area and the Old Town. Over night: 4* Hotel in Riga.
Day 3: AM: You will be met in your hotel reception by our guide and driver to be taken on a trip to the medieval castles of Turaida and Cesis in the Latvian countryside, followed by a stroll through the cobbled streets of Cesis before returning to your hotel. You will visit Turaida castle, the museum, and climb the tower. For lunch you'll be able to dine at one of the local cafes and try out local delicacies such as mushroom soup, nutritious local bread and honey beer.
In the afternoon, continue on to the medieval town of Cesis and explore the cobbled streets. Visit Cesis castle, built in the 13th Century, seat to the Livonian order and one of the best preserved castle ruins in Latvia. Cesis itself is a pretty castle town, and a lovely place to visit. With an ancient old town and market square, it is a haven for walkers and lovers of history and nature.
Day 4: AM: You will be met at reception to be taken on a tour of Rundale Palace, followed by a trip to Jelgava Palace and Museum, and then return to your hotel. Rundale Palace is one of the most outstanding monuments of Baroque and Rococo art in Latvia. It was designed by the Italian artist Rastrelli, who designed the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg.
Continue on to Jelgava with a short stop at the Petrina Academy. Then you'll have time for lunch and to sample some local delicacies such as pickled herrings, double cream and cottage cheese. After lunch visit Jelgava Palace. The largest Baroque style building in the Baltics which was once residence of the Duke of Courland. Over night: 4* Hotel in Riga
Day 5: AM: You will be met at reception to be taken on a trip to the Latvian Film Studios and then onto Jurmala, the Latvian coastal resort with a stop-off at one of the many fishing villages en route with an opportunity to taste the local smoked fish, before returning to your hotel. A visit to the Latvian Film Studios is an exciting opportunity to see behind the scenes of this glamorous industry. There are two permanent outdoor film sets that recreate the nineteenth century and Second World War.
These sets are massive and very interesting to see. For the more flamboyant of you, you can also dress up as different characters from World War Two! Jurmala has a wonderful beach, 33 kilometres of wide white sandy beach stretch as far as the eye can see, flanked by pine forests. It's a beautiful sight. Its lovely town is very picturesque with clapper board houses on tree lined avenues. Over night: 4* Hotel in Riga.
Day 6: AM: Check out of your hotel. Transfer to Riga Airport to meet your flight home. End of your Latvian Tour.
