The journey North of the country goes through the beautiful terraced hillsides that characterizes much of Rwanda's landscape, gradually climbing to the base of the Virunga volcanoes, sometimes with as many as five peaks visible. Overnight: Gorillas Nest Lodge (FB).

Day 2: Volcanoes National Park.

Head for gorilla tracking in Parc National des Volcans (subject to permit availability at the time of booking). Tracking the gorillas through the light mountain forest on the slopes of the Virungas is awaresome experience. If you are lucky you can get to the gorillas, spend an hour with them, and be back at the base in time for a late lunch. Overnight: Gorillas Nest Lodge (FB).

Day 3: Volcanoes National Park.

Either go for gorilla tracking again in Parc National des Volcans (on payment of supplement at time of booking), or visit the golden monkeys or drive to Gisenyi, visit Ross Carr's orphanage and Lake Kivu or climb the Visoke/Muhavura volcanoes, or trek to Dian Fossey's grave, or visit the local school, community projects or walk to Lake Bulera. Overnight: Gorillas Nest Lodge (FB).

Day 4: Volcanoes National Park - Kisoro.

Today either relax or walk near the Lodge, visit the golden monkeys or trek to Dian Fossey's grave. After lunch transfer to Uganda [Adjust the clock forward one hour]. Time permitting go for a walk near Mount Gahinga. Overnight: travelers Rest Hotel (FB).

Day 5: Kisoro.

Either go gorilla tracking again, this time in Mgahinga/Nkuringo (on payment of supplement at time of booking), or climb a volcano, or go for a nature walk, or visit the golden monkeys in Mgahinga. Overnight: travelers Rest Hotel (FB).

Day 6: Kisoro - Bwindi.

Drive to Bwindi through the Switzerland of Africa, with the road winding through many hills and valleys. Time permitting go for a guided nature walk in the thick forest rich in birds, butterflies and monkeys. Alternatively go for a cultural visit of the nearby local communities and share the way of life and living. Bwindi Gorilla Resort or Gorilla Forest Camp (FB).

Day 7: Bwindi.

Either go gorilla tracking (on payment of supplement at the time of booking), Gorilla trek - up relatively early for a hearty breakfast to give you the energy needed for gorilla trekking. Report to the ranger station at 8:00 am, from where the guides will take you through the bush, slashing at the undergrowth, parting thick creepers, to track the gorillas. (A reasonable degree of fitness is required as well as a sturdy pair of walking/hiking shoes). Sit in the forest among the gorillas, listening to them grumble to each other, and marvel at the sheer size of the dominant male - the silver back. Amazing to think that there are only 650 or so of these creatures left in the world! Overnight: Bwindi Gorilla Resort or Gorilla Forest Camp (FB).
