The Acatenango-Fuego complex is made up of two volcanoes, Acatenango at 3,880m is the third tallest in Guatemala and Fuego is among the most active volcanoes in the world. On our trek you will climb to the absolute summit of Acatenango to view the volcanic belt on both sides as well as the active crater at Fuego from far and near.
This long and strenuous hike not only takes the group up from the trailhead at Soledad to the summit of Acatenango and back but also sets them up overnight in our private campsite with a unique view of active Volcano Fuego for sunset, sunrise and overnight. We leave at 8am in our private transport for the trail head. At the sleepy little town of Soledad (Solitude) is the trail head where we will start the hike to the summit of Guatemala’s third largest volcano. The trail yields views North of the Cuchumatanes and Sierra de las Minas ranges and Volcano Agua to the East as we climb then snake cross-country towards the summit trail.
Acatenango’s summit at 3,975m rewards your hard work in reaching it with unparalleled views of Volcanoes Agua and Pacaya to the East, the volcanoes at Lake Atitlán to the West and of course moody Volcano Fuego immediately to the South. From the summit we descend part of the way we came then hike on for about another hour to our private campsite. The guide will set up camp and cook a hot dinner for the group while all watch over Volcano Fuego looking for fireworks.
Your guide wakes you for sunrise and prepares a hot breakfast followed by tea and coffee while you have the option to go back to sleep for a bit. We will break down and pick up camp and head to the saddle between Acatenango and Fuego. It’s a pretty walk of about two hours where we will set up camp for the second night. In the afternoon we will grab our water bottles and head up to Fuego where we expect to see some action from a 1/2 kilometer's distance. From there we'll return to camp for another hot meal prepared by your guide and pass the night at the new camp.
In the morning breakfast is served and camp is packed up for the final time and the group heads down the mountain for a late lunchtime arrival in Antigua.
