This itinerary visits some of the most scenic areas of the Great Rift Valley where walking and game viewing can be simultaneously done all in total absence of mass tourism! The highlights are the Crater Lake and Crescent Island sanctuaries, Hell's Gate National Park, Lake Elementaita with guaranteed interruptions from Giraffe, Waterbuck, Eland, Zebra and various Gazelles.
We visit Lake Nakuru National Park, which is colored pink with thousands of flamingoes, and the open grasslands are home to the White Rhino and the Rothschild's Giraffe. The Black Rhino are found in the forests around the lake. The Masai Mara: the Africa that every one dreams of takes the last 3 days of the tour with Elephants, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Topis and Hippos all calling for our attention. A walk guided by the Massai makes this a perfect tour in all regards taking in the heart and life of Kenya!
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Nairobi
Arrival at the airport at night and reception by Ontdek Kenya Ltd. Transfer from the airport to the La Mada or equivalent hotel in Nairobi. This hotel is chosen as it is nearly the only hotel in Nairobi where you can not hear night city sounds. A true blessing and hardly anyone knows about this well kept secret!
Day 2: Crater Lake walk and overnight at the Crater Lake Camp
After breakfast there is the briefing by the guide about your upcoming adventure. By 8.30 a.m. we leave Nairobi via the Nakuru road to the Rift valley. The Nairobi - Nakuru road is on a contour along the rim of the Great Rift Valley and on viewpoints we will be able to see our whole route for the next few days due to the great distances visible in the Rift Valley.
We arrive at the Crater Lake Camp our base for three days! Here we will enjoy lunch. An afternoon walk with pleasant interruptions from Giraffes, Black and White Colobus monkeys, Zorillas, Aardvark and a range of Gazelles, all which are easily found in the sanctuary. We will hopefully have the chance to spot a Leopard during our stay here!
Day 3: Hell's Gate National Park returning to overnight at Crater Lake Camp
We wake up for breakfast with the sun giving a wonderful effect over the Lake. An early morning here should not be missed by anyone with an eye for birds since the lake boasts a wide variety of water and woodland birds. After breakfast we do a short transfer to the gate of the park. This is a unique park where walking is done in the middle of wildlife. Giraffes, Zebra, Warthog and many types of Gazelles are found here.
The first part of this walk is done in typical flat African savannah in a volcanic area with huge rock boundaries. There are Camphor and Acacia trees all over and this is where to look for the Giraffe as they mainly feed on these trees. A picnic lunch provided by the hotel will be at the Rangers post. The last part of the walk is done in the Hell's Gate Gorge by descending into a steep canyon with running water from geysers and wild vegetation. The climax of the day is in walking in Erosion gorges where the rocks have split to leave only a walking path. We climb back to the rangers post for transfer back to Crater Lake.
Day 4: Walking on Crescent Island returning to overnight at Crater Lake Camp
A morning walk at Crescent Island, which is a peninsula on the Eastern shore of Lake Naivasha. There is a lot of easy to see game e.g. Giraffes, Waterbuck, Eland, Zebra and Impala. It is also a haven for birds with +200 species recorded. The walk is gentle and satisfying. We return to the Crater Lake for Lunch. Free afternoon to relax and enjoy this special location.
Day 5: Full day Game drive at Lake Nakuru National Park to then overnight at the Sunbird Lodge overlooking Lake Elementaita - a real treat! Known for its thousands of flamingos but also for the vast herds of Buffalo, Rhino and Cats like Leopard and Lion Lake Nukuru is a well known National Park in Kenya. You will appreciate all aspects of this Lake and we plan our tour for the day carefully to avoid the larger groups!
Day 6: Lake Elementaita
To Sunbird Lodge and a short drive takes us to our start point for our Lake Elementaita Walk. We return to Sunbird Lodge for the night. Walks on the shores of Lake Elementaita. We walk mainly in open savannah land and occasionally we will stop for a chat with a Massai herdsman. The gentle sloping hills give a good panorama. The wonderful Fever Trees line the shore and birdlife abounds! On the lake sure you can feel and see how we are in the middle of the Great Rift Valley!
Day 7: Masai Mara
To see the best of Kenyan wildlife the Masai Mara is the place to be. Elephants, Rhino, Giraffe, Buffalo, Various gazelles and all the Big Cats are found here. Days in Mara are for extensive gamedrives as you now see a whole new ecosystem and if your lucky hit the migration in it's full force. Our game viewing does not actually start at the park gate. We will be able to see many animals along the way grazing side by side with the Masai livestock. We reach the tented camp/Lodge our home for the next three days, in time for lunch.
Days 8 & 9: Masai Mara
Activity days in Masai Mara; We do a morning game drive through the park and hike to a Masai manyatta (=homestead). Here we will see how the typical Massai live. An afternoon game drive makes the day complete. On day 9 we can do a morning and and afternoon game drive. We can also take a break from the driving with an optional walk in a natural area with rolling hills and grasslands, out of the park boundaries. A nice change of pace!
Day 10: Return to Nairobi in time for lunch. Day rooms are provided at the La Mada hotel for use until 6 p.m. Evening transfer to the airport where we say goodbye.
