Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Nairobi. Arrival and transfer to the La Mada or equivalent hotel in Nairobi. This hotel is chosen as it is nearly the only hotel in Nairobi where you can not hear night city sounds. A true blessing and hardly anyone knows about this well kept secret!

Day 2: Sangare Game Conservancy.

A lovely walk here and overnight at the Sangare Tented Camp. A lovely new tented camp which we will almost have to ourselves. It is always our stratergy to find these hidden jems.

A brief on Sangare Ranch: Sangare is a 6500 acre private wildlife conservancy sandwiched between the Aberdares and Mt. Kenya. The 12- tent camp overlooks over a fresh water lake full of exciting bird life and where game comes to drink. The Sangare Hill forms a magnificent backdrop for the camp. The ranch whose habitat is open savannah with scattered bushes is home to zebras, giraffes, antelopes, warthogs, leopards, hyenas, elephants and buffalo. Bird life in Sangare is rich with + 300 birds species recordered such as Red-winged Starlings, Greater Blue-eared Starlings, Olive Pigeons, Northern Crombec, Grey Flycatcher and the Cardinal Woodpecker. At the lake there are many more to see such as Red–knobbed Coot, Black Crake, Storks, Pelicans and more.

The tents are spacious and luxurious with four poster beds, unique African furnishing, private verandahs and en-suite facilities with flush toilets and shower. With only 12 luxury tented suites on the property we should almost have this camp to ourselves! Leaving the camp on foot we will enter the open grassland from the lake, where the big herd of the resident Waterbuck, Eland and Bushbuck will make us stop for pictures!

The walk is on a sanctuary road (used for game drives & walks) and we move on towards the Sangare hill on relatively flat terrain before we get to the bottom of the hill. From here we use a path in the bush to climb up the hill where we get a one-off view over the whole area. We have a good view of the Sangare camp and the lake, the snow-capped peaks of Mt. Kenya and the Aberdare range. Picnic lunch is on the Sangare Hill. We then circumnavigate the hill and enter back into the Sangare property. Taking a different road through the ranch we will walk looking for Giraffes, Impalas, Zebras, Warthogs, Thompson's and Grant's gazelles. Delightful! Back to the camp for overnight.

Day 3: Full day for Gamedrive at Solio Conservancy returning to overnight at Sangare Tented Camp.

After breakfast we drive to the nearby Solio Sanctuary for an extensive game drive in the Rhino sanctuary, which has the world's largest concentration of Black Rhinos. The White Rhino is also found here as well as the Reticulated Giraffe, Leopard, Lion and a wide range of plains game and bird life. Since this is a private sanctuary it is little visited by the main tour operators (The Lemmings you will see few others if any at all! Another Gem! In one morning game drive this Sept 2008 I saw about 25 Rhino with a mixture of both White and Black.

Day 4: Walk in Aberdares Game Sanctuary + travel for the nights accommodation at The Ark (Aberdare National Park).

The walk in the game sanctuary of the Aberdare National Park with opportunities to see Warthogs, Thompson and Grant's gazelles, Zebras, Reticulated Giraffes and the largest antelope in the world: Eland. On their own these animals are a wonder to watch but to do so while you are walking is an experience that has always brought joy to our guests. Lunch is at the Aberdares Country Club, which is also the check in hotel for the Ark. Highlite at the Ark is to see Elephants, Buffalo, Rhino and other game coming to a floodlit waterhole right below the balcony of the hotel. For the few lucky ones the elusive Bongo & Forest Hog can sometimes be seen. This is the same National Park where the famous Tree Tops Hotel is located. This is one of many other options some guests choose. The Ark is the choice of a Luxury tour and is deeper in the park! We have to confess this is a famous destination and you will see why we 'try' to not follow the tourist trail! This is a fun visit and contrast to our other choices in this tour.

Day 5: To Sunbird Lodge where we will be staying which overlooks Lake Elementaita. Gamedrive at Soysambu Conservancy or an optional walk to the lakeshores of Lake Elementaita.

A three hour bus drive takes us to the Rift Valley, where we will stay for 2 nights at the Lake Sunbird Lodge. We interrupt the ride with a visit to the Thomson Falls in Nyahururu. Optional decent to the foot of the falls (a 20 min walk). Afternoon gamedrive at the Private Soysambu Ranch which is now a conservancy where there is plenty of plains game such as Giraffes, Zebras and Gazelles. Depending on weather and your personal interests we can arrange a walk down to the lake instead for those interested. A lovely experience!

Day 6: Full day Game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park. Overnight at Sunbird Lodge.

Known for its thousands of flamingos but also for the vast herds of Buffalo, Rhino and Cats like Leopard and Lion Lake Nukuru is a well known National Park in Kenya. You will appreciate all aspects of this Lake and we plan our tour for the day carefully to avoid the larger groups!

Day 7: Crater Lake - Naivasha. Over night at the very private Crater Lake Camp.

This is a private game conservancy in Naivasha from where we will do guided walks and/or vehicle gamedrives. Game to see is Giraffes, Black and White Colobus Monkeys and a range of Gazelles. With +200 species of birds recorded this is a great place for bird watchers.

Day 8: Hell's Gate National Park and overnight at Crater Lake Camp.

After breakfast we do a short transfer to the Hell's Gate Park. This is a unique park where walking is done in the middle of wildlife. The first part of this walk is done in typical flat African savannah in a volcanic area with huge rock boundaries. There are camphor and acacia trees all over and this is where to look for the Giraffe as they mainly feed on these species. A picnic lunch provided by the hotel will be at the Rangers post. The last part of the walk is done in the Hell's Gate Gorge by descending into a steep canyon with running water from geysers and wild vegetation. The climax of the day is in walking in Erosion gorges where the rocks have split to leave only a walking path. We climb back to the rangers post for transfer back to Crater Lake.

Days 9 - 10: Walks on Crescent Island with a lovely two night stay at Loldia House.

Transfer to Loldia House on the shores of Lake Naivasha. This colonial house is our base for the next 2 days in which we will walk around this lovely spot actually owned by dear friends of mine - It was the home of John Hopcrafts mother and now managed by Governors camps as a luxury cottage. Our walks will allow us to soak up the spledour of this area amongst rich plains game. We will also cross over to Crescent Island for more guided walks and to give a better perspective on the area.

Day 11: Flight to Governors Camp in the Maasai Mara to overnight at the Governors Camp. (3 nights 11,12+13)

To see the best of Kenyan wildlife the Masai Mara is the place to be. Elephants, Rhino, Giraffe, Buffalo, Various gazelles and all the Big Cats are found here. Days in Mara are for extensive gamedrives as you now see a whole new ecosystem and if your lucky hit the migration in it's full force.

Day 14: Flight Mara – Nairobi. Arrive in Nrb in the early afternoon for lunch. Day rooms available for use till 6pm. Evening to the airport for the evening flight out.
