The Lemosho Route: is an unspoilt, remote, little-used and beautiful way up to the Shira Plateau. It can either be used to gain the Western Breach route or followed by the Kibo South Circuit to ascend by the easier Barafu Route. The route is one of the few where groups may be accompanied on the first day by an armed ranger as the forests around the Lemosho Glades are rich in buffalo, elephant and other big game animals. Accommodation on the mountain is in tents; you will need a sleeping bag but a sleeping mat is provided. The porters do not pitch the tents for you but will help if you wish. This is a strenuous walking trip but within the limits of a fit individual used to walking in mountain areas. Ski sticks or ice-axe are useful when ascending the scree to the summit.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive Springlands hotel (B&B).
Day 2: Drive to Londorossi Park Gate then on to the Lemosho Glades. Walk along forest trails to Mti Mkubwa campsite.
Day 3: The trail steepens and crosses several streams in the giant heather zone. The Shira Ridge is crossed to the Shira Plateau, camp by stream.
Day 4: A gentle walk across the plateau leads to Shira Hut camp on moorland meadows by a stream. A variety of walks are available on the Plateau making this an excellent acclimatisation day.
Day 5: A rocky path leads east up towards the Lava Tower. Shortly beyond this, you descend to Barranco campsite.
Day 6: Scramble easily to the top of the Great Barranco and then a traverse over screes and ridges to the Karanga Valley campsite, beneath the icefalls of the Southern Glaciers.
Day 7: The trail ascends a ridge to a campsite by the Barafu Hut, an airy location with little vegetation.
Day 8: Start just after midnight for the ascent of the screes leading to Stella Point. From here a further 40mins. leads to Uhuru Peak. Descend to the Barafu Hut for a rest and brunch before continuing down to camp at Mweka Hut at 3100m.
Day 9: A 3-4 hour descent through beautiful forest brings you to the Park Gate. Drive back to the Springlands Hotel (B&B).
Day 10: Leave hotel after breakfast.
