This tour is offered as an exciting option for those who want to get away from the Pantanal’s High Season crowds. Only possible at the climax of the Dry Season, this off-road journey uses 4WD vehicles to cross two remote river valleys which stay green all year round, even when the rest of the Pantanal is gray. Attracted by such a large food supply, huge bird colonies form here every year, amongst the beautiful scenery which includes a rare ‘mountain’ on the floodplain.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Cuiaba/ Pouso Alegre.
Arrival at the airport. Transfer to the Pantanal. After traveling 100 km to Poconé, the Transpantaneira park road is taken, arriving at the Hotel Fazenda Pouso Alegre in the afternoon. Located in the middle of the floodplain, this is a great place to see a wide variety of animals and to a good introduction to the environment, especially by a group of Hyacinth Macaws who come every evening to roost in the trees surrounding the lodge. A sunset hike and night safari to try to see rare animals such as ocelots and foxes.
- Overnight at Pouso Alegre lodge;
- Hiking and night safari. Includes: (D).
Day 2: Pouso Alegre/ Sao Cristovao.
Up at sunrise for a hike to a small hill where many rare animals can be seen as nature awakes. Return for breakfast and a horse-ride through the fields. Lunch and departure along an ‘off the beaten track’ route crossing forests and fields, until reaching a remote place - the São Cristóvão lodge. Arrival in the afternoon, in time to enjoy a gorgeous sunset.
- Overnight at São Cristóvão lodge;
- Rowing boat trip, terrestrial safari. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 3: São Cristóvão.
The São Cristóvão lodge is located on the banks of the river Bento Gomes, on its only 10 navigable kilometers, near where it ends, in a huge lake – the Baía de São Bento. Wild and only accessible in the Dry Season, this region has many hills with a large concentration of rare birds and mammals such as the tapir, black-howler monkeys. Horse riding, pedal-boat, truck and night safaris are the main activities in this area.
- Overnight at São Cristóvão lodge;
- Horse-riding, canoe trip, hike and night safari. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 4: São Cristóvão/Caranda.
Early in the morning, departure by truck on a 3 hour journey to Carandá lodge. Using a cattle truck provides the chance to be in an area which is used by the local people, but hardly ever visited by travelers. Driving in the middle of nowhere, this truck drive enables the feeling of isolation which is unique to the Pantanal to be captured.
- Overnight at Carandá lodge;
- Truck or 4X4 vehicle transfer, hiking. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 5: Carandá.
Located in the valley of the Paraguayzinho river, where any sign of civilization has never passed, this enchanted region was 35 years ago the home of the prized Swedish photographer Arne Sucksdorff, who lived here for about 25 years. The first-time visitor to the Pantanal is sure to fall in love with this bewitching area, remains green even in the dry season. Many rare parrots, Hyacinth Macaws, ocelots and giant anteaters live in this area, which uniquely for the Pantanal has some mountains and in some areas, mysterious caves as well. We will visit one of the larget nesting sites of migratory birds in the whole area. Other activities include boat trip, hiking, horse-riding, night and truck safaris.
- Overnight at Carandá lodge;
- Truck, horse riding and canoe trip. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 6: Carandá/Chapada dos Guimaraes.
Early in the morning, departure from Carandá lodge for the town of Poconé, requiring a 65 km journey which crosses many old farms. As this route is not built on an artificial embankment like the Transpantaneira, the feeling which it brings of visiting an unexplored area and having contact with the local people and their habits, foods and ways of life is extremely powerful. After Poconé, ‘back to the future’, with a 1-hour journey on asphalt to Cuiabá, and then on to Chapada dos Guimarães a completely different environment. Sunset observation from the top of the plateau, at the Cidade de Pedra. Accommodation at a pleasant lodge installed in a ranch integrated to the nature.
- Overnight at Villa Guimarães;
- Hiking and sunset in Cidade de Pedra. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 7: Chapada dos Guimaraes/Cuiaba.
After breakfast, a visit to the National Park, with walks through the scrubland and the chance to swim in the many waterfalls, including Véu de Noiva, the largest one (96m). Then on to the airport to catch the appropriate flight.
