Ilha Grande is located in the Bay of Angra dos Reis, 120 km away from Rio de Janeiro. Regular and private boats depart from the port of Mangaratiba towards the Island. Regular boats take 1 hour and a half to reach the island. Its historical relevance dates from the time of the discovery of Brazil, year 1500. Its first inhabitants were near 150 Indians and the island had international importance, registering episodes of piracy, traffic of slaves and contraband of merchandise between centuries XVI and XIX. It also subsisted from the cultures of sugar cane and coffee.
It still exhibits beautiful historical sites such as churches in the middle of exotic and exuberant tropical vegetation. The Colônia Penal de Dois Rios settled in 1903, and used until 1954 was the place where politicians, spies, foreign government collaborators and famous writers were segregated. Today the island is a self-sufficient ecological tourist destination and it is very well preserved.
