The Archipelago of Fernando de Noronha has historically fascinated visitors for its exceptional ecosystem and incomparable natural scenery. The first to admire it was great navigator Américo Vespucio in 1503. In 1832 Charles Darwin was bewildered with his rich fauna and flora. At present Fernando de Noronha is also admired for being an example of environmental preservation keeping harmony with his inhabitants. The waters of Fernando de Noronha, and 70% of the territory of the island, are National Park that protects species like rotatores dolphins, exotic turtles, birds and a series of endemic species.
Fernando de Noronha is the tip of a mountain range of 4000mts high, which summit arises on the sea and is known as the emerald of the Atlantic for the color and transparency of its waters, that really resembles an emerald. It is to 200 nautical miles away from the continent. It owns important registry of the History of colonial Brazil and underwent different invasions by Portuguese, English, French and Dutch. Fortresses on the sea with splendid views, churches and old large houses give small towns of islanders distributed along the main island- an special enchantment.
Near 3,000 people live in the island. The archipelago is formed by 21 islands and 26 sq km, being the largest with 17sq km the only one inhabited.
There is excellent visibility (50mts) and warm waters, it is suitable either for snorkeling or diving in different depths, day an night. It is considered one of the best diving points of Brazil. It owns good structure of boats, compressors, PADI instructors and rent of equipment. There are no decompression chambers available on the island. The great majority of inns and hotels are simple structure due to construction restrictions. Be warned that this is a rustic ecological destination, lacking any luxury.
