Farewell to the Bay of Islands and return south to Auckland following the recommended scenic coastal route from Russell following the old Russell Road through the predominately Maori rural communities and Blue Pacific Bays of Whangaruru, Oakura and Helena before turning inland to meet up with State Highway 1 at Whakapara and continuing south. Approaching Auckland 40 minutes north you could choose to detour to the historic Puhoi hotel for a kiwi pub lunch and a pint. This relic from New Zealand’s pioneering history is a real gem. It was built in 1879 and reflects much of the areas early bohemian history. It is also a favourite weekend haunt for dozens of motorcycling enthusiasts.
Days 6 - 8: Auckland – Fishing and Sightseeing:
Auckland Adventure. You are booked to enjoy another magic fishing trip, out on the gulf catching a wide range of exciting fish varieties on light tackle, fly or the incredibly successful new technique of soft plastic bait fishing. For your evening meal you could enjoy cooking your day’s freshly caught catch with delicious recipes supplied by Pure Magic fishing.
Day 9: Auckland - Whitianga:
From Auckland follow the Pacific Coast Highway east to the rugged & spectacular Coromandel Peninsula through a patchwork of beautiful rural and coastal scenery including mussel and oyster farms. Explore the historic early colonial gold mining settlements of Thames and Coromandel then travel over the ranges to the beautiful beach front town of Whitianga situated on magical “Mercury Bay” Whitianga offers access to a wide variety of sea fishing opportunities and will be your destination to explore and enjoy for the next 3 nights and 2 days.

Catch big fish straylining for xos snapper, drift fish to catch huge sea bass or troll for surface feeding fish including sea trout and albacore tuna.
Day 12: Whitianga - Whakatane:
From Whitianga we head south and east following the Pacific Coast Highway to Whakatane in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Known as the “tuna capital” of the southern hemisphere. Our journey passes through pine forest plantations, the active gold mining town of Waihi, the famous mural town of Katikati, commercial orcharding areas of Kiwifruit, Avocado, Citrus etc before arriving at the beautiful harbour port city of Tauranga and adjacent surfing paradise of Mt Maunganui beach. Indulge in a leisurely lunch at one of the trendy waterfront cafes and enjoy a relaxing soak in the unique hot saltwater pools before following the coast road to your destination of Whakatane, a region rich in Maori history/culture, and a serious fishing lovers heaven!
Days 13 - 14: Whakatane – Fishing and Sightseeing:
We trust that the weather gods are kind today for a very special day’s fishing is planned. You will be fishing some 50 km offshore in water depths of up to 300 metres in the shadow of New Zealand’s only active marine volcano, White Island. This island is a major tourism attraction in its own right and is incredibly spectacular with daily tours landing on the island by boat and helicopter to view the hissing, bubbling fumaroles and roaring, rumbling craters. Needless to say the fishing in these bountiful waters is out of this world and the variety and size of the dozens of fish species to be caught is legendary. The wildlife is incredible too with fur seals, penguins, varieties of dolphins, orca whales, humpback whales and mighty 28 metre (90 ft ) blue whales are sighted on a regular basis.
Day 15: Whakatane - Rotorua:
Head inland from coastal Whakatane to Rotorua, the Maori cultural capital of New Zealand. This short journey will take you through rich fertile dairy farming countryside, picturesque native bushland areas and several large pure fresh water trout lakes including Rotoma, Rotoehu, Okataina, Rotoiti and on to Lake Rotorua itself.
Days 16 - 17: Rotorua - Fishing and Sightseeing:
Rotorua, the tourism capital of the North welcomes you with an abundance of exciting things to see and do. Known as Trout Fishing Heaven, Rotorua is a worldwide mecca for serious trout fishers and offers 10 secluded bushlined lakes bursting with trophy sized wild rainbow and brown trout. Fed by a myriad of pure rivers and streams which provide magnificent fishing by boat or from land. Your fishing type is optional. However, only Lake Rotorua remains open for year round fishing so a tranquil charter cruise trolling lures usually guarantees catching a trout at any time as on average 2/3 fish are caught per hour. Lake Rotorua’s average rainbow trout weights are 1 - 4.5 kg and brown trout are 2 - 8 kg.
Day 18: Rotorua - Taupo:
Leaving Rotorua the journey to Taupo passes through rich dairy and deer farming country and the outskirts of Kaiangaroa pine forest (the largest man made forest in the world.) Before descending to the “great lake” of Taupo we pass through the Wairakei geothermal electricity generating power station area and turn off to enjoy a uniquely New Zealand dining experience and fascinating tour of the Wairakei Prawn Farm which exists due to the run-off of warm water from the power station before it exits into the Waikato River. The freshwater prawns are a giant Malaysian River Prawn which rapidly grows to maturity in just 8 months and over 1 billion baby prawns are born at the farm annually.
Days 19 - 20: Taupo - Fishing and Sightseeing:
Your Lake Taupo fishing adventure begins at the boat harbour. You will be boarding a modern luxury charter vessel for a fantastic fishing cruise on the lake catching lively wild rainbow and brown trout on trolled lures attached to a downrigger, play your fish then boat them as your vessel cruises the shores of this magnificent crystal clear lake. You could also visit Mine Bay to view the centuries old Maori rock carvings or anchor in a tranquil deserted sandy cove to enjoy a tasty lunch or barbeque with cold liquid refreshments.
Day 21: Taupo - Auckland:
Leaving Taupo heading north the return journey to Auckland should be leisurely. Travelling through the Waikato region, one of New Zealand’s major dairy production areas with lush green pastures and through the quaint and interesting, small country towns of Tirau and Matamata. Continue on to Auckland for your final night’s accommodation at a luxurious four star plus waterfront hotel with spectacular views adjacent to the CBD and overlooking the popular upmarket bars/restaurants of the viaduct harbour, the home of the America’s Cup yachting in New Zealand.
Day 22: Departure:
Check out of your hotel. Your personal chauffeur will be waiting to drive you to Auckland International Airport to continue your onward journey. Aroha nui (farewell) from New Zealand.
