In Cidade de Deus we’ll visit a project named Casa de Santa Ana, a pioneer project for poor senior citizens in difficult situation in favelas in Brazil. The work there began in 1991 as Day Care Center that offers full balanced meals, social work assistance, physical therapy, psychological support, nursing, and social activities such as chorus, percussion and dance.
The activities have the objective of avoiding the withdrawal of senior from social life. But Casa de Santa does not limits itself only to senior citizens and tries to improve the whole family situation, some years ago they started organizing activities for children and teenagers including music, singing and percussion classes and ballet classes for girls from the age of 03 till 10 years old.
During the visit to the district, we’ll get to know some of the activities offered by the project and afterwords we’ll make a small walking tour through the neighborhood, followed by one of the dwellers that will explain about the way of life there. This is tour quite informative not voyeuristic getting to know another side of the Brazilian society. By doing this tour will be contributing to the maintenance of the activities offered by Casa de Santa Ana.
