This summer trip is a great one for kids. The hike to base camp is 3 miles with an elevation loss of 600 feet and is rated easy.

The summer is a wonderful time for the shaded gorges of Boulder Mountain tributaries and the Navajo narrows of the Escalante. Slick rock bottomed creeks slip between folds of sandstone and pour through many pools large enough for swimming. The Anasazi are evidenced by many granaries and petroglyph panels. In order to explore the country and accommodate different interests and abilities we split into smaller groups on the day hikes.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1 - We meet at our office in Boulder, UT at 9 am. We provide a duffel bag for your gear (25 lbs. max.) and drive to the trail head. The 3 mile hike to camp ends in a view of the areas we will be exploring and a dramatic trail into the Escalante River Canyon.

Day 2 - We hike down the Escalante River to an old stock trail and up onto a slick rock bench covered with smooth river pebbles. We drop down a narrow slot and up another side canyon to swim through a narrows. Then we follow the gorge, stopping at 4 rock art panels on our way back to camp.

Day 3 - We wade downstream past petroglyphs & granaries on golden walls stopping to swim in deep pools. We climb out of the Escalante Canyon onto the slick rock domes. The shorter option cuts off the many river goosenecks while the longer route ascends a 1000' Slick rock mesa for an incredible and revealing view of the canyon lands.

Day 4 - We hike up a colorful ridge of slick rock to the highest view between two main canyons. Then we descend on an old horse trail to the river canyon to see the most intriguing Fremont petroglyphs, caves and an arch we can hike through.

Day 5 - We hike upstream to one of several ways out of the Escalante Canyon and back to the vehicle. Then we return to Boulder, UT by about 6 pm (dinner not included).
