From there, you'll proceed to Lankester Botanical Gardens. About a 90 minute hour drive east of San Jose, Lankester is located in the Central Plateau near the historic colonial city of Cartago. Situated at about 3000 feet above sea level, these gardens are renowned for its extensive orchid collection featuring the most important collection in the world of miniature Pleurothallid Orchids as well as Oncidium, Phragmipedium, Stanhopea and the beautiful Cattleya skinneri and Cattleya dowina, both in danger of extinction. Overall there are over 800 species of native and imported orchids as well as bromeliads, palms, bamboos, heliconias, bromeliads, palms and conifers. Leaving the garden towards the gift shop, there is an excellent specimen of an African tulip tree, Spathodea campanulata . Peak flowering month for the orchids are February through April.

Before we head back to San Jose, we'll visit nearby Orosi Valley, one of the most beautiful valleys in Costa Rica. Descending into the valley from the mountains, you’ll pass by coffee farms and many panoramic vistas. The Reventezon River snakes its way from the mountains and empties into Lake Cachi. There are scenic vantage points near the town of Orosi, which lies at the head of the valley, and in Ujarrás, which is situated on the banks of the lake. Near Ujarrás are the ruins of Costa Rica's oldest church. Built in 1693, the church’s lovely walled gardens are a great place to relax and enjoy the views of the surrounding mountains.
