Known as the Nahanni of the East, the Moisie river has breath-taking scenery, a bona-fide wilderness challenge and little human company. Pouring from the glacial-scoured Québec/Labrador taiga-like highlands the river drops over 500 m (1,700 feet) from its headwaters to the St. Lawrence River. There are many rapids, waterfalls and deep canyons - and some short but difficult portages - though none are over 500 m (0.3 mile). The scenery is quite wondrous through the gorge in the mid reaches of the river where cliffs rise 600 m (2,000 ft) on each side. We may have time for a few short optional hiking trips to photograph some of the most impressive scenery in Québec. If you are looking for a beautiful river, this is the one!
Our 8-day, 160 km (100 mile) trip, has only 5 portages and mostly class 1, 2 and 3 rapids. However, it visits the most beautiful part of the river - the Moisie Gorge - there is nothing else like it in the East. You must have some whitewater canoeing skills and be in good physical condition to join us.
We usually start the day early rising around 6:30 hrs to get on the river before 8:30 hrs. We will scout the more difficult rapids and each canoe will decide whether to run, line or portage. Your guide might be able to run canoes solo through some rapids that you have chosen not to run. We try to finish paddling early (between 15:00 and 17:00 hrs) each day and this usually allows some time for relaxing, snoozing, swimming, reading, fishing, etc.
This trip uses Pakcanoes which are folding canoes of exceptional durability and light weight. They are checked baggage on scheduled flights. So we spend less time getting to the river at considerably less cost. We will fly in by charter aircraft from a small lake near Sept-Iles to a widening of the river just above the gorge. We end the canoeing at a campsite at the mouth of the river below the Railway Rapids.
