Visit the crown jewels of the National Park system in the springtime when tourists are few and wildlife abounds. Ice cold freshets rush along the road as we cycle north through the pine forests and aspen glades toward Yellowstone National Park. Its magic unveils itself in rising mists of simmering turquoise hot pools and gushing spouts of thundering geysers.
Cinnamon bison babies frolic amidst wildflowers and tender green grass in Teton National Park. Mountain lakes sparkle under the ragged front of snow-bright peaks. As we pedal along the bluffs of the Snake River, we are sure to sight osprey and eagles, herds of elk and bison, a coyote or moose and with luck, a wolf.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: We meet at the Best Western Teton West in Driggs, ID for a rental bike fitting at 3:00 pm, an orientation at 5:30 pm and dinner at 6:30 pm.
Day 2: We start our tour with a beautiful ride along rural country roads. We’ll cycle on the west side of the Teton Mountains, pass by the spectacular Mesa Falls for a picnic lunch, and then stop in the town of West Yellowstone. 46 or 61 miles.
Day 3: We’ll pass through the gates of Yellowstone and cycle along the Madison River to our lodging for the night: the Old Faithful Snow Lodge. Within walking distance of the world’s most famous geyser, this is the park’s newest lodge. Its heavy timber and log construction make it fit in with the other older, more rustic buildings of the park, yet it features all of today’s modern conveniences. 34 miles.
Day 4: Today’s ride includes a gentle climb over Craig Pass and the Continental Divide to Lake Yellowstone Hotel. This beautiful, colonial-style luxury hotel is situated on a site long known as a meeting place for Indians, trappers and mountain men. In the afternoon, we will hike along the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Created 600,000 years ago by huge volcanic eruptions, the Canyon Rhyolite flow, and the melting of the last glaciers, this geologic wonderland is full of breathtaking views and roaring waterfalls. 39 miles.
Day 5: Our shorter day of cycling will leave us plenty of time to shuttle to Grand Teton National Park for a hike beneath the spires. The park features the 40-mile long Teton mountain range with eight peaks over 12,000. In the evening, we’ll enjoy a float trip and try to spot eagles and deer. 19 miles.
Day 6: We’ll get up early to catch the sunrise on the majestic Tetons as we pedal our way through Grand Teton National Park to Jackson Hole. Wildlife is abundant at this hour of the day, so keep an eye out for elk and moose grazing beside the road. We lose elevation today so the longer ride should feel easy. 47 miles.
Day 7: We end our tour with an easy ride around beautiful Jackson Hole on a bicycle path. Then, we’ll say our good-byes over a picnic lunch in town and then shuttle to the airport by 2:00 pm. 15 miles.
