Rising at the common borders of Turkey and Iran, Mt. Agri (Ararat), an inactive volcano capped year round with ice and snow, reaches 5.137 meters. The Old Testament records that it was on this mountain that Noah´s Ark came to rest after the great flood. Climbing the spectacular Agri (Ararat is a challenging and rewarding experience.
This tour program is a combination of trekking to the peak of Mt. Ararat, the highest mountain of Turkey.
Long time Mt. Ararat was military zone and it was not allowed to climb there. There are two different number given as the height of the mountain. Its up to to you which one you will take: 5.137 or 5.165 meters. Since the last years its again allowed to climb on this legendary mountain. The Old Testament records that it was on this mountain that Noah´s Ark came to rest after the great flood. Mt. Ararat is a volcano which erupted middle of 19th century the last time. The summit of the mountain is all the year covered with snow and ice.
Difficulty level of the tour: The difficulty degree of the tour is degree 3. Hikes up to 6 to 8 hours, in peak days max. 11 hours. ascend up to 1.000m, descent up to 2.000m Well body condition and health is required, beeing swindle-free, a good balance.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arriving to Antalya, Transfer to the hotel.
Day 2: Transfer to airport and domestic flight to Van, accommodation in Van in the hotel.
Day 3: Sightseeing around Van. Visiting castle Hosap, Cavustepe and the island Akdamar with the famous church from the middle age. Overnight in Van.
Day 4: Late in the morning transfer to Dogubayazit, on the way stop for lunch at the Muradiye Waterfall. Time for shopping in Dogubayazit.
Day 5: Transfer to village Eli, then 5 hours hiking to the first base camp on 3.200m. Overnight in tent.
Day 6: We are walking 4-5 hours to the second camp on 4.200m Here we have a short rest and hiking down to the first camp back (2,5 hours). Overnight in tent. Overnight in Green Camp.
Day 7: Further again to the next camp on 4.200 m, which is directly under the peak. The rest of the day we will relax because the next day will be a long and hard day. Overnight in the second camp.
Day 8: 3 hours hike takes us to the village Eli. Further by vehicle to the town Dogubeyazit. Overnight in hotel.
Day 9: Early in the night, at 03.00 h we have to wake up and prepare us for the last part of the trekking, to the summit. A steep, stony path is taking us to the roof of Turkey. On 4.500m snow and ice border will be starting. After 5-6 hours we are reaching the peak, 5.165m After enjoying the view from the peak we hiking down 5 hours to the the camp number 1 on 3.200m height. Overnight in tents.
Day 10: Sightseeing around Dogubayazit. Only few km upwards from the town there is the Ishak Pasa Palace, a building from the 17th century. We are going for to visit this palace and the "official" Noahs ark. Overnight in Dogubayazit in the hotel.
Day 11: Transfer to airport Van, domestic flight to Antalya, overnight in a beach hotel.
Day 12: Day for relax.
Day 13: Day for relax.
Day 14: Day for relax.
Day 15: Transfer to the airport Antalya and flight home.
