‘Mara’ means ‘spotted’ or ‘dappled’, a reference to the acacia vegetation which dots the savannas of Southern Kenya where the Masai live. Still resident, the Masai have not been influenced by western culture, with their herds of cattle in this unique setting. Experience the Masai culture side by side with the natives.
Your Itinerary:
Day 1: Pick up from the airstrip and transfer to the campsite, hidden away in an Acacia forest. Afternoon ride to explore the surrounding area.
Day 2: Early morning ride, returning to camp for breakfast. The rest of the day spent exploring this magical area on the horses, by car, or on foot. Night drives can be very rewarding to see nocturnal animals.
Day 3: After breakfast, you ride through vast tracts of open country, heading for lunch and a water stop for the horses, beneath the Bardamat Hills. Enjoy a siesta before the afternoon ride, which climbs through these scenic hills to the next campsite. Set on a bluff offering unparalleled views, this site will display the extensive countryside that surrounds you.
Day 4: A day spent exploring this untouched area of Maasailand.
Day 5: You move on, carrying lunch in the saddle bags. Riding west, through open country, to reach the Njaknjiak Gorge for a refreshing lunch time swim in the rock pools. In the cooler hours, head for camp pitched on the Olare Orok stream.
Day 6–8: Probably the best game viewing area the Mara has to offer is based at the Accacia Camp. For the next three days, you explore the surrounding countryside by horse and Land Cruiser, and interact with the local Masai.
Day 9: After breakfast, depart for the airstrip.
