A natural engineer, the beaver can construct artful and massive dams across rivers and streams. Beavers are most often observed from a screened hide placed near its lodge, a conical structure made of wood and plastered together with mud. The beaver is lured by food, which is aspen the skin of which is the beaver’s favorite. A guide will take you to the screened hide and back. Snack will be provided during your stay at the hide. The hide is situated a few hundred meters from the road at furthest.
One of the best places in Finland to see and photograph brown bears in its natural habitat is in the peaceful surroundings next to the Russian border in Suomussalmi. You will be overnighting in the hide, which has nice seats, places for sleeping, audio system and toilet. During the safari, it is possible to see different sizes of bears and some other animals like for example white tailed eagle and black kite. Depending of the time of the summer, there are 5 – 15 different bears visiting the feeding place. If you are lucky you might see a mother bear with some cubs visiting as well.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival in Kajaani. Transfer from Kajaani to Hotel Kalevala in Kuhmo (approx. 1hr). Dinner at the hotel. Overnight at Hotel Kalevala. Includes: (D).
Day 2: Beaver Observation. Breakfast at the hotel. Morning at leisure to relax or explore the surrounding area. Lunch at the hotel. In the afternoon, a guide will take you to the observation screened hide near a beaver’s lodge. Return to the hotel late in the evening for your overnight. Overnight at Hotel Kalevala. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 3: Bear Safari. Breakfast at the hotel. At leisure after breakfast. Mid-day transfer to Martinselkonen Wilds Center. Lunch is served at 3pm before leaving to the bear hide. Snacks provided during the evening. Overnight at the bear hide. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 4: Return to the Hotel Kalevala. Return to Martinselkonen at about 7am the next morning. Breakfast is served before returning to Hotel Kalevala. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax, explore the surrounding area or catch up on your sleep. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight at Hotel Kalevala. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 5: Departure Kajaani. Breakfast at the hotel. Mid-day transfer to Kajaani. Includes: (B).
