This photographic and/or family safari is only possible with a minimum booking of two Guests. An experience beyond being able to say: "I've visited Sossusvlei, therefore, I've seen the Namib", Sossusvlei, notwithstanding its awesome view and magnificence due to the high sand dunes is, in effect, but "part" of the Namib desert, a contributing facet to a seemingly boundless, living expanse.
A safari vacation / holiday such as this, will prove beyond any doubt that the Namib desert - in all its apparent inhospitable appearance - will become a family and/or photographic event that children would probably never have considered, but will admit as the memory to treasure forever.
Your Itinerary:
Day 1: Meet your host at Namibia’s International airport. Transfer to Windhoek for a short tour of its sights and sounds before settling into a comfortable Hotel room. Remainder of the afternoon/evening at own leisure until dinner. Relax from the long flight and acclimatize to Namibia.
Day 2: A leisurely breakfast and slow start towards the perimeter of the Khomas Hochland - our central highland. Near the edge of the escarpment, your first stop for a more gradual transition from highlands, to the low-lying Namib.
Day 3: Breakfasted, and almost acclimatized, the entire family better have cameras at the ready! After a photographic extravaganza at the edge of the escarpment, descend into the Namib for your first night at a nature camp.
Day 4: Entire day to relax on nature / sundowners drives and guided walks and hikes. A first welcome to a very harsh, yet fragile eco-system - the Namib.
Day 5: Moving further south into the Namib, you will today arrive in an area of the this desert that is constantly described as "the most photogenic landscape that the Namib has to offer", something you will witness yourself.
Day 6: The very hospitable owners will be expecting you and be ready to treat you to Game drives, dune drives and guided photographic tours. Entire day for activities plus farm-style, home-cooked meals.
Day 7: To depart from here is not easy, but be assured, your next destination will take you to even loftier heights - about 384 meters higher - as you visit and climb some of the highest sand dunes in the world at Sossusvlei. When you arrive at this Moroccan-styled, tented camp, you will have time to explore the immediate surrounds on foot before dinner, served al-fresco on the terrace with paraffin/kerosene lamps lit after sunset. Dine while viewing desert wildlife quenching their thirst at a flood-lit waterhole.
Day 8: Be woken before dawn to travel along the Tsauchab River Valley towards Sossusvlei. After viewing the changing colors of the landscape as the sun rises, descend and enjoy a picnic breakfast under age-old Camel thorn trees. Return to the Lodge for an afternoon Siesta. Late afternoon, explore the geologically historic Sesriem Gorge.
Day 9: Unfortunately, all good things must also come to an end and today you have to return to Windhoek. Not to make the return to civilization too harsh, overnight at a small Game Lodge on the outskirts of Windhoek. End your day and your safari with a nature drive, for a final glimpse of our southern hemisphere sunset, on this, your last night in Namibia, Africa.
Optional Extra: (Not included in safari price - N$3050 p.p.). Having been to Sossusvlei on foot, and you feel the inclination, a private operator offers early morning hot-air balloon flights over the desert and mountains, to see Sossusvlei from the air. In the cool, pre-dawn air, ascend in a hot-air balloon and silently drift high above the immensity of the Namib desert. From this exclusive vantage point, the rising sun paints an endless vista of shadow and light over an ocean of sand dunes and mountains. After about an hour of silently riding the air, descend and celebrate this unique event with a champagne breakfast in the middle of the desert. Flight certificates will be presented before the 4 X 4 drive back to the lodge. (This could be managed before departure to Windhoek, as the flight is very early).
Day 10: Subject to flight departure time, you may have all morning to enjoy nature walks on the premises, or simply relax on a pool chair, viewing wildlife at the waterhole. Transfer to Namibia’s International airport to arrive in time for your departure flight.
