Ingarikó tribe, with a population of approximately 900 people in Brazil, is belonging to the Karib linguistic family, also known as Kapon. Divided in seven communities/villages (malocas), which are called: Serra do Sol, Mapaé, Awendei, Sauparú, Kumaipá, Pipi e Manalai, they traditionally inhabit the mountains of the north-eastern region of Roraima, on both sides of the border with the Republic of Guyana (formerly British Guyana) and Venezuela.
In Guyana and Venezuela this group is called Akawaio, and their population in Guyana reaches 7,800 individuals and within Venezuela, their population is of approximately 50 000. The Ingarikós (Brazil) live by subsistence farming, fishing and hunting. They live along the banks of the Cotingo River. As closer we get to Serra do Sol, where the biggest Ingarikó community is found, less contact and relation they have with the outside society. They keep their fame of dangerous among their neighbors by using the expression ‘kanaimé’ to scare their ‘relatives’.
Ingarikós follow a religion called Areruia. The cult is conducted by a priest, who they call Pastor. But only very few are qualified for the incumbency of being a priest, what makes him a rare and respected personality. On the exercise of his duty, the priest walks from one village to the other, even crossing the border from Brazil to Guyana to provide religious services to the Kapons on the other side. He’s the one who initiates the construction of churches. Areruia takes up a considerable part of their daily activities. A small ‘sacrifice’ is preceding each prayer.
There is also a drink of high alcoholic content produced from the cassava, sweet potato or corn, consumed by all Roraima's indigenous groups during religious ceremonies. It is from the forest that the Ingarikós take all the materials used to make their handicraft. Igarikós are well known for their basket making skills, made out of liana, titica and arumă fiber. Their handicrafts are very beautiful, frequently searched by Brazilian and foreign visitors. This is a tour especially ‘designed’ to visit these people in one of the most un-accessible and remote jungle areas in the World: northern Amazons!

- The encounter with the indigenous people will always be with much respect and in an introverted way. Always remember that we are visitors, therefore must accept their habits.
