Your Itinerary:
Day 1: Overnight flight from U.S. gateway city.
Day 2: Arrive in Reykjavík Your flight arrives in Iceland early morning. Transfer on own before checking into your hotel. Relax and explore the vibrant city of Reykjavík.
Accommodations: Hotel Centrum, perfectly situated in the heart of Reykjavík. Includes: (B).
Day 3: Reykjavík – Kirkjubæjarklaustur
Your “Glaciers, Geysirs and Waterfalls” tour begins today with a morning departure to Hveragerði, a horticultural center, where geothermal water is used to warm greenhouses. From there, the drive takes you through fertile farmlands and the sand flats of Markarfljót River, then across glacial rivers to Skógar for a visit to the local folk museum. Continue on to Reynisfjall and Dyrhólaey, a nature reserve. The promontory there is a natural arch carved by the pounding of the winds and surf. End the day in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, the former site of a 12th-century Catholic convent, with overnight stays for the next two nights.
Accommodations: Hotel Kirkjubæjarklaustur, located in an area of renowned natural beauty. Includes: (B, D).
Day 4: Skaftafell – Glacial Lagoon – Jökulsárlón
Today you drive from Kirkjubæjarklaustur to Skaftafell National Park. Established in 1968, this is one of Iceland’s most outstanding areas of natural beauty, dominated by Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest ice cap. Venture further to the Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon where huge icebergs, broken off the ever-shifting mass of Breiamerkurjökull Glacier, float and grind together in the still, deep waters of the lagoon.
Accommodations: Hotel Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Includes: (B, D).
Day 5: Landmannalaugar or Órsmörk Valley – Lagoons and Lava
From Kirkjubæjarklaustur, the tour follows the Fjallabakslei interior track to Landmannalaugar, a magnificent area surrounded by colorful rhyolite mountains. Travel from Landmannalaugar to Jórsárdalur Valley through which Jórsá, Iceland’s longest river (240 kilometers), flows. The volcano Hekla, which last erupted in 2000, dominates the valley. If the road to Landmannalaugar is closed due to road conditions (in spring), the tour travels through lava fields and out-washed sands on to the village, Vík, passing Seljalandsfoss and Gljúfrabúi. The day ends in Órsmörk Valley, a picturesque site beneath glaciers.
Accommodations: Hotel Flúðir, a hotel situated in the geothermal horticulture. Includes: (B, D).
Day 6: Gullfoss – Þingvellir – Reykjavík
Start your day viewing the famous Great Geysir and Strokkur, a hot spring that spouts every few minutes. Visit the Geocentre at Geysir, where volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and glaciers are still active. The next stop is Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most impressive waterfalls. Culminate your journey with a stop at Þingvellir National Park, where the ancient Parliament met in the open for centuries on the shores of Iceland’s largest lake, Þingvallavatn. Return to Reykjavík in the afternoon.
Accommodations: Hotel Centrum. IncludeS: (B).
