Did you know that Brokeback Mountain was filmed in the Canadian Rockies? Brokeback Mountain doesn’t actually exist, but the locations where it was filmed sure do. Kananaskis Country and Canmore, Alberta...these are the actual shooting locations for the mountain scenes in the Academy Award winning film. Why here instead of Wyoming where the story is set? It’s the spectacular scenery and accessible wilderness of Alberta.
On Brokeback Alberta, you’ll experience firsthand the stunning visuals of the movie while relaxing at luxury lodging in both Canmore and Kananaskis (where the cast stayed). World-renowned Banff National Park and Lake Louise are just a few minutes away for day visits or you have the option to include them in your vacation. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhall won’t be there, but then again this is your adventure. If you want to visit the same local watering holes where they hung out, we’ll point you in the right direction.
Your Itinerary
Day 1: Kananaskis Village
Arrive in Calgary, Alberta and begin the journey into "Brokeback" country. Following the directions in your personalized Travel Journal, it's about a 1.5 hour drive to Kananaskis Village (pronounced Can-an-ass-kiss) during which you experience the remarkable transition from city to foothills to mountains. Once at the village, be sure to go for a stroll along the peaceful trails overlooking the picturesque valley. Accommodation: Delta Lodge at Kananaskis (Deluxe Hotel Option);
Day 2: Kananaskis Village
Experience the accessible wilderness that makes Kananaskis Country a favourite destination for Albertans on your first Local Experience of Choice. After an exhilarating day of fresh air and adventure or a relaxing spa, savour a Canadian Rockies dinner and relax in the quiet village. Accommodation: Delta Lodge at Kananaskis (Deluxe Hotel Option);
Day 3: Kananaskis Village
After breakfast, enjoy a day at leisure (unless deciding to add another activity) and take the time explore this magnificent area. We provide insightful destination tips in your personalized Travel Journal to ensure that you make the most or your time here. Accommodation: Delta Lodge at Kananaskis (Deluxe Hotel Option);
Day 4: Canmore
Depart for Canmore and consider the off-the-beaten-path route recommended by our company in your Travel Journal. Be sure to have your camera and binoculars ready for the stunning views and oft-seen wildlife. Since the 1980's Canmore, located in the Bow Valley, has grown from a sleepy mining town to an internationally recognized travel destination for outdoor pursuits. Unique shops, quaint cafes and outstanding cuisine help to enhance the visitor experience. You'll also find opportunities for quiet pursuits, such as romantic walks along the beautiful Bow River. Canmore's proximity to Banff National Park makes the town an attractive and quiet alternative for those who want to visit the Park, but enjoy a more eclectic experience outside the Park gates. Accommodation: Paintbox Lodge (Deluxe Hotel Option);
Day 5: Canmore
Take in the thrill of the Rockies on another Local Experience of Choice. Whether choosing spa, outdoor adventure or a privately guided experience, you'll be sure to work up an appetite for another fantastic Rocky Mountain inspired dinner this evening. Accommodation: Paintbox Lodge (Deluxe Hotel Option);
Day 6: Canmore
Relax, shop, take a drive to Banff or Lake Louise - the choice is yours. As always, we help with suggestions in the Travel Journal, or we are just a phone call away if you prefer to discuss the options in person. We can fill you in on some of the local hangouts that were frequented by the actors and crew during the filming of Brokeback Mountain. Accommodation: Paintbox Lodge (Deluxe Hotel Option);
Day 7: Return home
Pull yourself away from the Bow Valley as you complete the final leg of your Brokeback Alberta journey. Make your way back to the Calgary International Airport and return home refreshed and with a lifetime of remarkable memories from your Travel Adventure!
