In the region between these two magnificent cities numerous tales abound. You are ensured of seeing the important sights along the way. Follow this road that leads us through the unfolding of its layers of history. Travel from Florence to Rome in a way most only dream of experiencing.
Day 1 & 2: Chianti and Siena: We ride from Florence into the heart of the Chianti region and spend our first night at a beautifully restored 11th century fattoria/winery. Bicycle along the "Strada Chianti", lined by oak groves, vineyards and tiny farmland villages into Siena. This medieval arch-rival to Florence is known for its splendid architecture and undoubtedly the world's most beautiful Square "Il Campo". Along the way we have the opportunity to visit the main villages that formed the original Chianti alliance as well as the wine-making hamlets nestled in the hills. We tour the grounds of Castello di Brolio, the home of the Chianti blend and have ample opportunity to sample the Chianti Classico.
Day 3 & 4: Surreal Landscapes and Thermal Baths: Out of Siena we find ourselves in the quiet countryside of vineyards, abbeys, Roman baths & historic hill towns. Bike to a 13th century Abbey for a viewing of the cloisters frescoed by Signorelli and Sodoma, whose work we re-visit many times along our path to Roma. A surreal landscape known as crete, a bare, ash gray soil of deeply fissured hills, serves as the backdrop into the land of the prestigious Brunello wines. The mountains of this region are dotted with quiet medieval villages and are varied in landscape rich in minerals, which produce muscle-melting thermal spas.
Day 5-7: Crater Lakes and Etruscans:For 2 days bike amidst a landscape that often appears in Renaissance paintings, and through an area known for its significant medieval villages, gothic architecture, Etruscan remains, fine wine and Italy's largest volcanic lake. A day off the bike allows us time to fully explore Orvieto's wine tradition as well as its many medieval treasures. With rested legs we cycle through a region renowned for a revolutionary art style depicted by the ornate town fountains and gardens, best defined in the bizarre "Park of Monsters" and if you are partaking in our fall tours, we enjoy a special evening treat at the annual chestnut festival.
Day 8: Villas & Amphitheaters: The castle laden countryside varies between rolling hills, extinct volcanoes, high tufa cliffs and dense forest as we approach the boundary of the ancient Roman realm. Along the original road to Roma we visit the remnants of the empire on our way to a volcanic lake rich in bird life. From here all roads do lead into Rome. We transfer you into the center where you may wish to explore on your own. If so we offer suggestionsof hotels and walking tour itineraries...
