Now, for something completely different, we thought it would be great to ride from the heart of the Alps to the beaches of the Italian Adriatic. You’ll go through three regions, cross three mountain ranges and see two countries, Austria and Italy. Starting in the heart of the breathtaking Alps in summer, you cycle through alpine terrain, by waterfalls, through green valleys, across streams, by glacial fed lakes and across tree line. The trails are an intoxicating mix of single track, jeep and forest trails, river beds, gravel and tarmac roads. You’re supported by our two experienced mountain bike guides who’ll look after everyone. You also have the option to use gondolas, jeeps and boats during different stages of the tour.

Two national parks, mountain lodges equipped with spas and excellent food on are offer as you wind your way down to the Adriatic and a hotel on the beach. One night you’ll stay in a rustic mountain hut high in the mountains. As you cross into Italy, it’s all downhill as you go through ancient villages and landscapes and stop for a little wine tasting. The tour includes 3-4 star lodging, full vehicle support, two tour guides, breakfast and dinner, and return transport. This tour will appeal to intermediate level cyclists or higher and is open to all ages from 18. Due to the level of difficulty, we cannot accept novice cyclists.

Your Itinerary:

Day 1: After meeting up, you’ll be transported to our beautiful tour start hotel in Lungau. Here you’ll be fitted on the bikes, the guides will provide route orientation, and technical tips before dinner. A long day waits for the first stage so it’s early to bed.

Day 2: This day starts early as you cycle through Salzburgerland and into the Lungau region, past Mur and Innerkrems to the beautiful treeless Nock Mountain National Park, an area like no other in Austria. Starting at Mariapharr, you climb from 1000m to 2300m above sea level, passing Moosham Castle and small villages along the way. This is the biggest climbing day with four ascents and descents before your final thrilling drop into Bad Kleinkirchheim and a well deserved rest. Distance: 72km/44 miles.

Day 3: Starting at 1000m in Bad Kleinkirchheim it’s a day of lakes as you head south, towards the Kaiserburg. Take the optional gondola to the top, or ride up to the 1684m summit. From there it's an excellent downhill towards the gorgeous lakes of Carinithia, the Feld am See and Millstatter See, nestled in the Gurktaler Alps. Distance: 45km/28 miles.

Day 4: After leaving one range of hills, it’s downhill into the Drau River valley and cycling on the Drauerweg before entering the Carinthian Nature Park and more single track. It’s also a chance to pull over for a refreshing dip in the Weissensee, the highest swimming lake in Carinthia. There’s an option to cross the lake by raft on this stage for those who can’t get enough waterborne activity. Distance: 48km/30 miles.

Day 5: Cycling the length of the lake takes you to the base of two successive climbs over the Naggler Alps before a steep drop into the Gail valley near the Italian border. The last climb of the day takes you into the Straninger Alps. Home is a superb alpine hut at 1500 meters. Distance: 52km/33miles.

Day 6: Crossing the Austrian-Italian border at Passo di Mel. It’s a day of long descents by the hill towns of Paularo and Zuglio. The difference in culture is immediate at the first village you encounter. There’s proscuitto and wine tasting to be had before dropping into the Tagliamento River valley through the beautiful tracks towards the beautiful hilltop town of San Daniele. Distance: 92km/55 miles.

Day 7: With the mountain ranges above and behind you, our specialist guide takes you through the ever changing and labyrinthine Tagliamento River valley towards the sea. Snaking gravel tracks and undulating river trails lead you to Bibione and your hotel on the beach. For the last night a farewell party is on offer before heading back north. Distance: 97km/59 miles.
