Very active trip with the acclimatizing part full to the brim: two alpine peaks climbed, a pass crossed.

Your Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival to Mineralny Vody. Bus transfer (3.5-4hr) to the Ozone Hotel in the Baksan valley, the first one of the European standards. Features: heated swimming pool, access to telephone trunk line from rooms, access to Internet etc. Food: sumptuous Buffet breakfast, dinner with 3-4 dishes for choice, lunch-packets for outings. Hotel. Included: (L), (D).

Day 2: We go in a 4WD vehicle (30min) down the Baksan to the mouth of the most beautiful valley of the area, Adyrsu. The vehicle brings all the luggage, camping equipment and supporting staff to the camp site in the forest at the head of the valley. We walk 12km on the rough road in the woods, and come to out tents, already pitched in a patch of pine forest near a clear stream. 4hr. Camp at 2400m. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 3: Today we walk up along the Adyrsu River, cross it by bridge and turn into a side valley, Kullumkol. There we walk on a good path for 3.5hr, and pitch the tents at the “Paradise campsite”, 2900m. The last bit of the path is fairly steep. The campsite overlooks several high alpine peaks. Camp. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 4: Today we make the non-technical ascent of Tyutyu-bashi West Peak (4010m). It takes 8-9hr. We walk in a rocky path, cross a flat glacier (roped up), climb some easy rocks, walk on a ridge and come to the summit. The altitude is quite considerable for the third day, so the group can split at the beginning of the ridge leaving there those not willing to go on (provided the weather allows that). Then we retrace our steps and return to camp. Camp. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 5: After a hard day it is a leisurely walk down to our forest camp.3hr. Camp Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 6: A day of action again. We strike the camp, the staff load all our camping things (and personal ones, not needed) in the truck, off it goes down the valley and we go up and over the Koyavganauch pass (3300m). A glacier is crossed, some steepish snow and screes climbed and descended for 7-9hr. We come to the neighboring valley, Adylsu, to a camp site called the “Green Hotel”. By the time we descend to the site all the camping things will be brought there by porters, the tents pitched. Camp at 2750m. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 7: Today we go to climb Gumachi peak (3840m), standing in the Main Range, The non-technical ascent is not really strenuous, but exciting with all the impressive alpine scenery around. Roping up, crossing a glacier, climbing a snow slope of 30*, some easy rocks (along a fixed rope). Return to camp. Camp. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 8: A slow, relaxed and short walk (2hr) down along the roaring river to the road-head. A short bus drive to the hotel. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 9: Today we go in a bus (20min) to Azau staion (2356m) of Elbrus car-cableway and the two runs take us to Mir station (3500m), where a chair-lift takes over to bring us to Garabashi huts (3750m) called Bochki (“barrels”). We put up either there or higher up in the new Refuge, not far from the ruins of the old one. Hut. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 10: Acclimatizing outing to Pastukhov Rocks (4750m). We walk for about 3hr up vast gentle snow fields, a steeper slope leading to the rocks. In 1.5-2hr we are back at the hut. Hut. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 11: The long and hard day of the ascent of East Summit. Time, weather and physical condition permitting we can try West one. In the latter case we will have to crampon up 30-35* 100m snow slope before we get to the summit plateau, from where the stunningly contrasting views to south and north open up. With return to the hut the climb takes 11-14hr. If we use an easier option, a Snow Cat bringing people (if they want it and ready to pay $20-30 each) to the top of Pastukhov Rocks, we can do it for lesser time. Hut. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 12: Reserve day to make up for bad weather on the planned day of ascent. Hut/ Hotel. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 13: We come down to find shower and comfort of the hotel. Party in the evening. Hotel. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 14: Bus drive to Mineralny Vody and flight to Moscow. Included: (B), (L).
