The shortest possible program made on the special request of our ever busy clients. Still it is packed with action and impressions. The success expectation on Elbrus is quite high. The acclimatizing part is not long, but very active: two easy spectacular outings on paths to 3000-3400m in different side valleys joining the Adylsu valley and an easy climb of a fine alpine peak (3870m) at its head. This is followed by Elbrus climb by the classic route, i.e. with the help of the cableways, via the Refuge.

Your Itinerary

Day 1: Flight to Mineralny Vody. Bus transfer (3.5-4hr) to the Ozone Hotel in the Baksan valley, the first one of the European standards. Features: heated swimming pool, access to telephone trunk line from rooms, access to Internet etc. Food: sumptuous Buffet breakfast, dinner with 3-4 dishes for choice, lunch-packets for outings. Hotel. Included: (L), (D).

Day 2: We go for 20min in a bus or truck up the Adylsu valley to Djantugan climbing base (now in the process of half-rebuilding half-dilapidating). The staff pitches our tents in the forest and we walk on a good path along a high moraine with the impressive Kashkatash ice-fall to the right. A height of about 3000m is gained in 3-4hr, from where the glimpses of high, snowy Main Range are afforded. On the way back we descend to the glacier for a short lesson in cramponning, and then descend to the camp. 6-7hr. Camp. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 3: This day we walk on a good and rather steep path winding up the meadows and shattered rocks to the VCSPS pass (3310m). Weather and fitness permitting we can turn there to the left and scramble further up along the ridge of Andyrchi peak. Descent to our camp. 7-9hr. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 4: From Djantugan base we follow a good path in the forest, check at the frontier guards post, then resume the path on meadows along the river and walk to the head of the Adylsu valley (2-2.5hr). There we pitch our tents on the wide meadow, called “green hotel”, not far from the glaciologist’s station (2700m). For those not tired after the previous days a short outing to 3000m with the dramatic view of a glacier cirque with several north walls. Camp. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 5: Ascent of Gumachi peak (3890m) standing in the Main Range. We rope up and walk on a large crevassed glacier. The climb itself is 150m of snow up to 30*, then a steep and stonefall prone scree, leading to a saddle, some easy rock scrambling (on a fixed rope if need be). The actual climb takes 7-8hr. When back at the “green hotel” we strike camp and walk about 1,5hr to the road-head, from where drive 15min to the hotel. Hotel. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 6: Today we go in a bus (20min) to Azau station (2356m) of Elbrus car-cableway and the two runs take us to Mir station (3500m), where a chair-lift takes over to bring us to Garabashi huts (3750m) called Bochki (“barrels”). We put up either there or higher up in the new Refuge, not far from the ruins of the old one. Hut. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 7: Acclimatizing outing to Pastukhov Rocks (4750m). We walk for about 3hr up vast gentle snow fields, a steeper slope leading to the rocks. In 1.5-2hr we are back at the hut. Hut. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 8: The long and hard day of the ascent of East Summit. Time, weather and physical condition permitting we can try West one. In the latter case we will have to crampon up 30-35* 100m snow slope before we get to the summit plateau, from where the stunningly contrasting views to south and north open up. With return to the hut the climb takes 11-14hr. If we use an easier option, a Snow Cat bringing people (if they want it and ready to pay $20-30 each) to the top of Pastukhov Rocks, we can do it for lesser time. Hut. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 9: Reserve day to make up for bad weather on the planned day of ascent. Hut/ Hotel. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 10: We come down to find shower and comfort of the hotel. Party in the evening. Hotel. Included: (B), (L), (D).

Day 11: Bus drive to Mineralny Vody and flight to Moscow. Hotel accommodation.970. Included: (B), (L).
