A multi-activity week in the middle of the wilderness will take you to the secret places of taiga. Hiking, husky trekking and paddling are the ways to move – Nature is the reason to go. The area on eastern border of Finland is one of the most untouched in Europe but still easily reached daily from your well-equipped wilderness base.

What you see and hear depends on the season of the summer – you are visiting the home of the bear, beaver, moose, wolf, wolverine, wild forest reindeer, flying squirrel and many birds. There are 4 ready-planned active days, a visit to “Petola” Carnivore Center and a night in a special hide to see the bears included in this week. New activities can be organized during the week depending on the weather, your interests and “special news” from the wilderness.

Minimum of 5 hours guided program is anyway included in the active days. In addition to that you have possibility to make your own photographing hikes/rowing trips, have sauna every evening, swim in the lake and/or sit by the fire listening to the “night less night” and of course you are welcome to take part in the daily care of the 30 Greenland huskies of the base.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival Kajaani. Arrival at the Kajaani Airport. Transfer to the hotel in Kuhmo, approx. 1 hour. Overnight at Hotel Kalevala. Includes: (D).

Day 2: Wilderness Base – Hiking the “Beaver Trail”. After breakfast transfer to the Wilderness Base of Ultima Taiga situated in the eastern border – approx. 40 min. The first active day takes you hiking in to the beaver nest and seeing other traces of beaver, maybe even the beaver itself. We also study many tracks left by the taiga animals. A hike about 10 – 15 km is partly on ready trails. Overnight at Wilderness Base of Ultima Taiga. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 3: Wilderness Base – Paddling on the “Kivikiekki” Lake. A day for paddling on the “Kivikiekki” lake. After introduction, safety procedure and learning the kayaking technique on shore, we take a tour across the lake studying the wilderness around. There are for example some river entrances with birds. Picnic lunch by the campfire on the shore or on an island. Before sauna and dinner, you can join the guide in his rowing boat putting fishing nets ready for the next day. Overnight at Wilderness Base of Ultima Taiga. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 4: Wilderness Base – Fishing. Immediately after breakfast, we check the nets for fish! Having fish means lunch by the lake, no fish means lunch inside in the base and a hike and/or rowing trip for fishing. We try several techniques to catch pikes and perches, which we know are around… Overnight at Wilderness Base of Ultima Taiga. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 5: Wilderness Base – A Day for Husky trekking. The day begins with an introduction to Greenland huskies, husky equipment and dog care. During the day, the dogs will help us hike faster by pulling with a special leash tied to their harnesses or back bags. Hiking with strong huskies is a bit more demanding than normal walking.

Everybody gets a dog of his/her own and during the day a new friendship will be born. The secret trail takes us to see an old bear nest with the stories of the bear, which once slept there. Overnight at Wilderness Base of Ultima Taiga. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 6: Wilderness Base – “Petola” Carnivore Center and Bear Observation. After breakfast, we visit the “Petola” Carnivore Center in Kuhmo. The center offers versatile information on Finland’s large carnivores – brown bear (Ursus arctos), wolf (Canis lupus), lynx (Lynx lynx) and wolverine (Gulo Gulo). Lunch in Kuhmo or on the way to Suomussalmi – this would be depending where we go to see the bears. We have 5 places to choose from.

The drive for the “bear night” takes 0,5 – 2 hours. From the car you usually have the best possibilities to see moose and wild forest reindeer. To see wild bears, you sit in a comfortable hide cabin. Depending on the chosen place we either come back to the Base very late in the evening or the next morning. Overnight at Wilderness Base of Ultima Taiga or in the Bear hide. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 7: Wilderness Base – A Day for Relaxing. A possibility to sleep late and have a late breakfast at the Base. Afterwards, transfer to Hotel Kalevala. The day is at leisure for relaxing or doing optional activities. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight at Hotel Kalevala. Includes: (B), (D).

Day 8: Departure Kajaani. After breakfast, transfer to Kajaani Airport.
