No words can adequately describe this fascinating and seductive corner of Portugal. Referred to as “Beautiful Eden”, by Lord Byron in the 19th Century, Sintra is now classified as a World Heritage Site. Consisting of a huge rocky outcrop that was thrust up from the earth’s crust millions of years ago, the Serra da Sintra is approximately 10 kilometers long and rises dramatically between Mafra to the North and The Lisbon Coast to the South. It projects into the Atlantic Ocean forming the most Westerly point in Europe, “Cabo da Roca”.
Throughout the centuries, this magical terrain has been home to Royal and Noble families and is littered with grand palaces and castles for all to see. The Old Town of Sintra is constructed in the medieval style, with narrow streets and winding steps leading to numerous restaurants, cafes and bars that attract tourists all year round.
