Four weeks immersed in acting, music, dance/movement in the beautiful south of France. Working with outstanding instructor who are professional performers as well as generous and dedicated teachers, participants build performance skills. Our surroundings inspire and inform our work as we visit villages, museums, beaches and sea ports to experience and explore the region.
Two days at the International Theater Festival in Avignon give us a chance to be spectators as well as performers with our own street theater performance. Live, work and play as an ensemble - learn the give and take of working together. Participants come from around the world. Instruction is in English with many opportunities to polish your French.
Faculty Information:
You create and perform original theater under the guidance of our expert staff while developing your skills in all the theater arts disciplines. We use our surroundings in the beautiful Cote d’Azur as not only a dramatic backdrop for our work, but a resource and inspiration for creativity. Why drag everyone to the South of France for the same program you could conduct in Iowa or Athens?
Because our staff and students come from world capitals such as Paris, London and New York, as well as small towns in Ohio and Iowa or a village in Yemen our creative work is imbued with the clash and complement of various cultures that participants bring with them. Further, theater traditions from various cultures are incorporated into the curriculum as well. The physical theater tradition of Europe is part of our work and the ancient tradition of street performance becomes part of the program as we perform at the International Theater Festival in Avignon.
We work and play as an ensemble – learning to work together, lead, follow and share strengths, talents as well as weaknesses and inexperience. Trust, respect and responsibility within the group become priorities. Throughout the month we work to build a safe and supportive environment in which participants can take risks in their work. Not everyone will hit high C, kick their foot over their head, or make us cry with a dramatic interpretation. However, each participant must find and expand their range in each discipline and present it professionally as part of an ensemble performance.
Each year we assemble a distinguished staff of international performers and artists with many years of educational experience. Our directors hail from Oslo, Edinburgh, New York, Paris, Jakarta, L.A. and elsewhere, bringing a wealth of training and work experience from a remarkably diverse pool: the Hart School, Yale Drama, Princeton, MSU, UCLA, Brown, Vassar, Théâtre Sans Frontières, Jacques Lecoq School, the Brooklyn Friends School, Red Moon Theater, La MaMa, Traverse Theater, Metropolitan Opera School, Nordic Black Children's Theater, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Other Activities:
Trips to museums, villages, festivals and beaches influence the work of the participants. A favorite trip is a picnic, hike and work session in the mountains overlooking the Mediterranean. Here, the students are challenged to reflect the majesty of nature in their work.
