Our Academy is the University of Amsterdam’s language institute. We are a subsidiary of UvA Holding BV, the university’s commercial arm. The Language Academy has a long-standing tradition of providing language courses to individuals, institutions and businesses.
We offer open enrollment courses to people interested in learning a language in groups that meet on a regularly scheduled basis; we also offer tailor-made, in-company courses for groups and individuals. Our office and classrooms are situated in the center of Amsterdam. Over the past few years, The Language Academy has seen its list of customers grow to an impressive size.
* International standard: The European Language Portfolio was developed and piloted by the Language Policy Division of the Council of Europe, Strasbourg, from 1998 until 2000. It was launched on a pan-European level during the European Year of Languages as a tool to support the development of plurilingualism and pluriculturalism.
Part of the Language Portfolio was to introduce a uniform system of language levels, the European Framework of Reference. One advantage of this system is that it can be used for all European languages. Another important advantage is that the system links with existing internationally recognized language level systems, language tests and language exams. As a result, comparing the various exams and level systems has become much easier.
Our Academy introduced the European Framework of Reference at the beginning of 2002. To give you one example: all our open enrollment courses are now linked to the framework. Naturally, the framework is also used for our in-company courses. In this way our participants know exactly which level they will have reached at the end of their course. This level is also stated on the course certificate, which is awarded to participants who have passed the test at the end of the course.

* International standard: Our courses operate within the European Framework of Reference, the internationally recognized standard for language levels developed by the Council of Europe. Each course is paired with a level from this framework, which gives you a concrete indication of what you can expect to be capable of doing in the target language by the end of the course. This level will be stated on the certificate you receive at the end of the course.

All our courses in Dutch, English, Spanish and German are available to non-Dutch speakers.

Facility Information:
Our Academy is situated in the center of Amsterdam, in a 17th century building on one of the city's famous canals. The school is within easy reach of all facilities, including hotels, hostels, bars and restaurants. The school itself has a refreshments room and offers free internet access to its students.
