We offer private (1 on 1) or semi-private (two students per instructor) instruction for children ages 3 and up. (Young children must be toilet-trained or wear a swim diaper.) We can also organize classes for larger groups of children (maximum of 4 students) for the convenience of parents who wish to have several children learn together. Learning to swim, as with any new experience, asks a child to stretch their former boundaries. While some may learn quickly and effortlessly, those who need more encouragement and patience will receive it. TI instruction has proven better than any other at easing the learning experience for all types of students and our young students have responded enthusiastically to learning in the Endless Pool.
Ages 3-4 – In this age group, our instruction emphasizes safety, comfort and confidence, while developing the foundations to swim efficiently. Before each class, students should use the rest room and prepare positively for the lesson. Bathing suits and smiles are required of all students, as well as bathing caps on all children with hair below ear-length. Goggles are encouraged. Parents are welcome to observe class and bring cameras.
Ages 5-6 – These classes are for children who have already mastered – or are ready to master – surface and underwater swimming for 5 to 10 seconds and rudimentary breathing. (If they have not, we will begin at a more elementary level.) We teach the foundations for all four strokes leading to the ability to swim independently for 30 seconds or more, using our gentle Endless Pools current to allow extended swimming. Instruction will be organized in three ability levels. The typical child should be able to complete each level in four to six 30-minute classes – but we will teach at their natural learning rate.
Level 1: We introduce the basic skills of breath control, balance, body alignment, and self-propulsion connected to body rhythms in the first series of classes.
Level 2: We teach Long Axis (rotation around the head-spine line – the foundation for freestyle and backstroke) balance, streamlining and body alignment for efficiency, with self-propulsion skills connected to body rhythms.
Level 3: We teach Short Axis (rotation around the hip-to-hip axis – the foundation for butterfly and breaststroke) balance, streamlining and body alignment, with self-propulsion skills connected to dolphin movements. We will also teach a legal breaststroke kick.
Ages 7 years and up – Classes at this level will advance the skills for all four strokes. We teach awareness of how the water works, further hone the child’s sense of balance and body position, teach breathing with body rhythms and teach them to connect arm strokes to core body strength. Students will develop stronger, faster, and more efficient strokes and be fully prepared to join a swim team if that is a goal. Children who have not completed the skills outlined above will be started at an appropriate level.
Faculty Information:
Through years of teaching, we’ve learned that the most effective TI instruction is more art than science. An expert TI teacher produces not just a competent student, but a passionate one, who is confident of continuous improvement and appreciates the purposeful and mindful TI approach. They do this by going far beyond mechanical mastery of the drills. They communicate effectively in the pool, from the deck, and in all encounters with students, teaching just as much about process as about the nuances of drills and skills.
