Cynthia will place an emphasis on the ability to analyze and evaluate any interior space in any country. The participants will develop an awareness of space and form, color, lighting, materials and furniture from the Renaissance to the 21st Century, and the role of art & accessories in making a space truly unique.
Participants will become familiar, in general terms, with some of the fundamentals and principles of good Interior Design. Learn to identify elements and principles of design in interior spaces, use a color wheel to assemble at least three of the schemes covered in the workshop, and apply the knowledge to evaluate and analyze a space.
Instructor Bio: Cynthia has been practicing interior design for more than 16 years in locations worldwide. Notably, she has been involved in a variety of residential and hospitality projects such as The World of ResidenSea in Oslo, Norway (68 condos on the ship), the Wilderness Lodge Annex at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida (102 vacation homes), hotels in New York City, Washington, D.C., Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Greece, and many residences small and large, domestic and international.
Interior Design is Cynthia’s third career – the first being Retail merchandising (advanced to Buyer, Home Furnishings at B. Altman & Co., New York City) – the second as “Diplomatic Spouse” to her Foreign Service husband in Rome, Italy; Athens, Greece; and Tokyo, Japan, where she planned, coordinated, and hosted official diplomatic functions. While overseas, Cynthia became very involved in working with U.S. Embassy Housing where she discovered the challenge of working with many personalities and cultural differences within the concept of “house / home.” Cynthia formalized this experience and her interests in travel / photography / architecture by returning to school and getting a degree in Interior Design – and the start of her third career.
She is a graduate of Colorado State University (Fort Collins, Colorado) with a degree in sociology, and a second degree, with honors, from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) in interior design. She is an adjunct professor of interior design at Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design (Lakewood, Colorado), teaching classes in Residential Design, Introduction to Interior Design, and Creating Space: Kitchens and Baths, is a certified interior designer by the National Council for Interior Design Qualifications (NCIDQ), and is a professional member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). She speaks five languages and has resided in six countries outside the U.S (Rome, Italy - Athens, Greece – Buenos Aires, Argentina - Tokyo, Japan – Baden bei Wien, Austria – Oslo, Norway).
